Strathclyde Chief Constable Stephen House said he and colleagues were encouraged to do nothing about violence in the home - because it was "easier". His revelation comes in a new telly investigation which reveals Strathclyde has the worst record in the country - accounting for half of all incidents. Violence behind closed doors has become Scotland's secret shame with one in four women and one in SEVEN men suffering domestic abuse in their lifetime. Confession ... A top black officer is suing the Met for race discrimination amid claims that senior police covered up a damaging report alleging racism in the ranks. Superintendent Paul Wilson, one of the Yard's most respected ethnic minority officers, claims he was sidelined after he wrote a report exposing bias in the force. Mr Wilson, 51, in charge of Safer Neighbourhood teams in Lambeth, was asked to carry out a survey of the experience of black officers in the borough at the height of the Met "race war" in 2008, when Britain's most senior Muslim officer, Tarique Ghaffur, was suing the then Commissioner, Sir Ian Blair, alleging racism. Many will remember George Dixon faithfully standing guard underneath the old blue lamp. But these days, you are just as likely to see private security staff outside a police station as an actual constable. Far from the traditional image of a bobby keeping a lookout on the station steps - memorably portrayed by Jack Warner in the long-running TV series Dixon Of Dock Green - it seems that the safety of our police stations is being left in the hands of civilians. Guards are being hired by overstretched forces to fulfil the roles of night watchmen, mon…

A youngster of 11 and a boy of ten, who cannot be identified, face two charges each of rape and two charges each of attempted rape. The trial will be before Mr Justice Saunders and lawyers will dispense with their wigs for the hearings. Today a jury was sworn in to try the pair, before the case was adjourned until Tuesday. Carmen Glover, a customer service advisor for Nottinghamshire Police, is celebrating a giant milestone in her career – taking her first 999 call. While this may not sound unusual as hundreds of workers in emergency service control rooms across the country experience this every year, for Carmen it represented the start of a career she never thought would be open to her, because she is blind. The 38-year-old, who has always been partially-sighted and fully blind for 16 years, applied to work in Nottinghamshire Police’s control room in 2008. She passed the skills test and interview and took up her place on the training course in February 2009. While she was training,…
