A judge has spoken out against England's sentencing rules after he was 'forced' to hand down a soft sentence to a child sex offender. Judge Peter Bowers accused the courts of failing to pay enough attention to victims, and said some of the sentences judges were instructed to deliver 'beggared belief.' After giving a two-year suspended sentence to William 'Don' McAllister, who was found guilty of sexual activity with a child, Judge Bowers said he was 'doing as he was told' by not jailing him. Judge Peter Bowers, left, criticised sentencing laws after handing down a two-year suspended sentence to William McAllister, right He said the advice given to the court for such…

Failing police will be fired under plans to tackle crime and yobbish behaviour unveiled by Gordon Brown yesterday. Chief constables and other top cops who do not combat problems will be replaced by officers from other forces. Those in charge of local “command units†will also be demoted or moved if bobbies fail to deal with public issues. The shake-up is part of a 50-point plan for a “fairer future†set out in Labour’s election manifesto. At its Birmingham launch, Mr Brown said police would serve people “as an individual, as a family, as a neighbourhood and as a communityâ€. The policing watchdog will step in if officers do not consistently meet nationally a…

http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish...86908-22168430/ Apr 8 2010 SINGER Darren Day said yesterday he was stunned to learn his keyring was an offensive weapon. The 41-year-old said he'd been given the kubotan 14 years ago to stop him losing his keys. Police discovered the 5in metal stick when they stopped the actor for drink-driving in Edinburgh last December. Day was yesterday admonished after being found guilty following a two-day trial of possessing an offensive weapon. Day, from Cudworth, Yorkshire, told Edinburgh Sheriff Court he was famous for losing his keys. He said: "It honestly never crossed my mind that I was carrying anything other than a keyring.…

If all else fails, blame the Police. Nasty behaviour by the louts, has not been promoted by the Police, but rather this naff government we have. I believe most of these cretins are known to the Police, but Police can do nothing about it, except keep arresting them.

A failed asylum seeker who killed a father-of-two while driving without a licence or insurance was jailed for just nine months yesterday - and was not ordered to be deported. Delshad Aziz, 28, was working illegally for a furniture removals company when he drove his van into Anthony Edney last year. Mr Edney, 44, was catapulted off his scooter and died in hospital of a ruptured artery shortly after the crash. Last night his heartbroken widow Maria expressed her anger at the length of the sentence and demanded Aziz be sent back to Iraq. However, Aziz will almost certainly be able to stay in the UK when he is released because the judge did not issue a deportation order …

A gang of immigrant yobs who molested a girl of 14 escaped prosecution - because it was "not in the public interest". Ria George was "mauled" by eight Slovakian gipsies aged between eight and 12. They groped her in the street for five minutes before she managed to escape and call police. Five gang members aged ten to 12 were arrested. Officers recommended criminal charges against them but are furious after the Crown Prosecution Service refused to take it further. CPS spokesman Patrick Noonan said "The age of the alleged attackers is not a difficulty. "The prosecutors concerned have gone through the evidence in detail and decided it is not in the public interest to pr…

A failed asylum seeker who killed a father-of-two while driving an uninsured van was jailed yesterday for nine months. Iraqi Delshad Aziz, 28, who is living in Britain with his wife and children, knocked Anthony Edney, 44, from his scooter in Hove, East Sussex last year. He was driving a work van while uninsured, working illegally and without holding a driving licence when he pulled out from a junction and hit the bakery delivery man on June 26. Mr Edney died in hospital of a ruptured aorta and left behind a widow, Maria, 40, and children Kieran, four and Jade, seven. Yesterday Mrs Edney said his sentence could never reflect their suffering. 'I do not want him sittin…

Justice Secretary Jack Straw had tried to take the sting out of the row by highlighting that Labour has already set in motion reforms to the legal aid system. They mean white-collar defendants will be means tested, but the changes are not being implemented in time to cover the MPs' case. Granted: Elliot Morley is one of three MPs who will get legal aid Despite this, Mr Brown told BBC Radio Derby: 'I think this money will have to be paid back by these politicians. I think the evidence is that people in their position will have to pay back the money - or most of the money - they get in legal aid. 'We have actually abolished this free legal aid from the end of June, so …

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/8616922.stm Army technical officers are dealing with a suspicious device left in Newtownhamilton in County Armagh. SDLP MLA for the area Dominic Bradley said he understood a car had been abandoned in Shambles Lane, close to the police station. Up to 60 houses were evacuated in Newry Street and the Commons area of the village. The alert began at about 0200 BST. Dozens of residents were moved to Newtownhamilton High School. Mr Bradley said there were similarities to bombs left by dissident republicans which exploded in Newry in February and close to MI5's Northern Ireland headquarters in Holywood, County Down on Monday. "It s…

Just a curious question about something that I witnessed the weekend, I attended the Doncaster Rovers FC v West Bromwich Albion FC football match and at the end due to WBA being promoted there was a pitch invasion. I was just wondering where the police stood on matters like this, could they fine, ban or even arrest people due to this as i'm sure i've heard that it is against the law to invade the pitch and there has also been alot of questioning from WBA fans about how South Yorkshire Police handled the whole situation with some fans calling how they arrested a couple of people heavy handed, how far are the police allowed to go to try and control and defuse the situation?…

A 'virtually blind' driver who killed a fellow pensioner after failing to disclose his poor eyesight was jailed yesterday for 16 months in a landmark case. Trevor Knowles's vision was so poor he failed to see William Florence, 78, crossing the road ahead and ploughed into him without braking, a court heard. Knowles continued driving after the offence and was stopped by police weeks later with a broken windscreen sustained in the collision. The court heard he had failed to notice the damage. Tests later revealed the retired businessman he could barely see a few inches in front of him and he could not read or write, even with the aid of spectacles. Knowles, 66, was i…
