Britain's most senior anti-terror officer John Yates has sparked a political row after he warned spending cuts would increase the risk of attack. Cabinet Office Minister Francis Maude reacted angrily to Assistant Commissioner Yates's comments, accusing him of "shroud-waving" and "alarmism". But Labour's Alan Johnson warned "we will all be in greater peril" if anti-terror operations are scaled back. The Times said Mr Yates described the planned cuts as "eye-watering". He claimed cutting 25% from the police budget - in line with across-the-board cuts to departmental funding announced in last month's Budget - risked weakening the nation's defences against al-Qaeda, the ne…

25/06/2010 - Bar doormen commended for helping injured copper Source: News Shopper Two door supervisors from Bexley who went to the aid of an injured copper are to get a police commendation. Rob Smith and Mitch Goodwin were on duty at Bar Lorca in Bexley Village High Street, and had alerted police to a man they had thrown out of the bar for approaching women customers and offering to share drugs with them. When John Horton, then a PC with the neighbourhood policing team, told the man he would be searched under the Misuse of Drugs Act, he threw a package of cannabis on the ground and ran. Fewer offenders could be locked up in prison and more given community sentences under reforms of the criminal justice system being planned by the Government. Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke told Sky News high reoffending rates are evidence that the current approach is not working. "They come in, stay in, go out, commit another crime and come back again," he said. In a speech, he questioned whether holding an "astonishing" 85,000 people in prison in England and Wales delivers value for money for taxpayers. Keeping a prisoner in jail costs an average £38,000 but this sometimes amounts to a "a costly and ineffectual approach that fails to turn criminals i…

The Home Secretary delivered this speech on 29 June to the Association of Chief Police Officers and Association of Police Authorities National Conference in Manchester. This version is as written, and does not include changes made on the day - therefore it is check against delivery. Not many people understand the weight of responsibility that rests upon the shoulders of a police chief constable. Like chief executives of large private sector companies, you manage multi-billion pound budgets, lead thousands of men and women, and devise strategies to succeed. Except, being a chief constable isn’t like being a chief executive at all. On Wednesday 2 June, Chief Constabl…

Police and paramedics should be excluded from health and safety laws which could prevent them taking risks to save lives, the Tory peer reviewing the legislation has said. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/politics/10357599.stm good stuff, now if a Officer sees a drowning kid, they can actually do something about it, instead of having their hands tied over health and safety issues. Thou having said that, from all i have seen Police go ahead and do their job anyway, and sod the consequences of health and safety. But it might be nice to know these restrictions might be taken away.

A drunk teacher who forced terrified motorists to swerve out of the way as she drove the wrong way at 70mph in freezing conditions escaped jail yesterday. Catherine Dean was nearly three times over the limit when she was stopped by police after a four-mile chase in freezing conditions as she drove north on the southbound A1, one of Britain's busiest roads. But although a court heard police found an open bottle of wine in her car, the mother-of-three walked free with a suspended sentence after a judge accepted her defence that she had suffered an asthma attack and only got behind the wheel to find a hospital. Judge Dudley Bennett was condemned by road safety charity…

A motorist driving near Banbridge felt the full force of the law this week when he was stopped for speeding. For the police officer giving him the reprimand was none other than the PSNI chief constable Matt Baggott. Mr Baggott regularly talks about the importance of "personal policing" and he put that into action on Thursday evening after addressing a meeting in Newry on the matter. The chief constable was driving back on the A1 dual carriageway in an unmarked police car when the offending motorist passed him. Mr Baggott and his colleagues tailed the driver and directed him over to the hard shoulder where the PSNI chief had a word in the driver's ear. He then called …

Yet another infallible belief of his shot down! Clearly the equipment is only as good as the person using it, and more attention should be given to checking the accuracy of the operator - usually civilian SCP staff, just collecting their coin!

A police woman has been injured after being struck on the back of the head with a brick in Newtownabbey. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/10472437.stm "I would also ask for the continued support of the community in tackling this type of behaviour and helping us address antisocial behaviour." Antisocial behaviour or attempted murder, i would have placed it in the second category.
