Greater Manchester’s top cop has urged the government to free his force from red tape and let police get on with fighting crime. Chief Constable Peter Fahy said cops should be allowed to use ‘common sense’ in doing their job. Instead, he said, his officers were effectively becoming social workers in complex cases, despite lacking qualifications and facing intense scrutiny from government inspectors, the media, coroners and watchdog organisations. "PLANS for volunteer police constables to drive at high speed would be a danger to the public, an officer has warned. The temporary chief constable of Kent Police has outlined the force's intention to be one of the first to train special constables, who volunteer part-time, for "urgent duty driving". But the plan has been slammed by a representative for officers in Kent as "a step too far". "God forbid we have a crash and find someone has been working extremely long hours during their day job and then has been allowed to drive a powerful car at high speed," said Ian Pointon, chairman of the Kent Police Federation – the trade union for officers.
