London's Deputy Mayor for Policing has admitted ridding young people of knives means changing an entire culture, but insisted: "We can and will do it." Kit Malthouse came to the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith on Tuesday and outlined to an audience of borough commanders, councillors and members of the public how the Met is going to tackle crime over the coming years. Afterwards he spoke to the Chronicle and was asked about the emotive topic of teenagers and knives. He insisted police in the borough have made real strides in keeping a lid on the problem, but admitted it will take more than simple tactics to stamp it out altogether. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/10457112.stm Radical prison reforms to "shut the revolving door of crime and reoffending" have been outlined by Justice Secretary Ken Clarke I could have sworn that most police officers have been screaming this from the top of our voices for years. Nice of them to notice. I fully agree though, prison doesnt work. It works in that it stops bad people mixing with good, but it doesnt prevent reoffending. If we could sort 2 things it needs to be: Prison needs to be more productive. As in you have to work in prison. We have a lot of recycling to be done and a lot of idol hands that could help. There needs to be a way out of criminal life. …

The Justice Secretary will declare that deep cuts in public spending must fuel a new approach to crime and punishment that puts more emphasis on rehabilitating offenders than on locking them up. Describing today’s prison population as “astonishingâ€, he will say that the current system is simply “warehousing†criminals at great expense and doing nothing to prevent them re-offending when they are released. In the strongest signal yet that the Coalition could scrap short prison sentences for many crimes, Mr Clarke will also say it is “virtually impossible†to rehabilitate someone during a jail term of less than 12 months. …

Just had a quick look on the Times news section and noticed this headline, Three arrests as ‘water fight’ closes Oxford Street Had a little read and it turns out that Londoners organised a mass waterfight from 1pm in Hyde Park. The event was apparently broken up after 8 hours and its said Scotland Yard were forced to issued a section 60. Was this, in peoples opinions, a necessity or a bit over the top? I do not know much about it and am curious to see what other, more experienced people will have to say. In my view it seems that a section 60 has little power to disperse people and is used more for stop and searches. Full article here click

Damien Park, 26, from Burnley has been jailed for 10 months following a vicious and unprovoked attack last October on a Marston Group Enforcement Agent. Park who has a criminal record including robbery was reported to have run into his kitchen when the Agent called and returned brandishing a large knife. Waving it menacingly in front of the Agent's face, Park then punched the Agent with such force that his nose was "bent over". Police were called and Park was arrested. Russ Holden, National Operations Director for Marston Group said "there was no excuse for Mr Parks behaviour. He had failed to pay his fine and as a result our Enforcement Agent was attempting…
