Good thing they were armed. http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=389594 Man fighting for life after police shootout A gunman involved in a shootout with police has been rushed to hospital after turning a gun on himself in Sydney's north this afternoon, according to initial reports.Local shopkeepers from the Eastwood Shopping Centre say they were lucky not to get caught in the cross fire as police traded gun shots with the man at a laneway near the centre about 1.30pm. A group of police out to lunch first noticed the man acting suspiciously. Police say they followed him into a laneway off Progress Avenue, Eastwood, when he started shooting at them. Police retu…

It's nice to see that in Australia we are quite happy sending criminals back to their own country if they are 'unlawful non-citizens' (a rather PC way of saying 'illegal immigrant'). Shame it took so long. And, a shame that he's going back to the UK but there you go. http://au.news.yahoo.com/080308/2/162zp.html Saturday March 8, 11:44 AM Child sex offender to be deported A serial child sex offender with a 43-year criminal history will reportedly be kicked out of Australia when he is released from a Brisbane jail this month. Raymond Keith Horne, 61, has been declared an unlawful citizen inAustralia after spending more than 14 years in prison for sexual offences…

I watched this video on YouTube this morning. Of course it looks impressive, as it's a promo, but do any of you drive one of these? Does it match up to the maker's claims? Or have the bull-bars been failing in their job?

It's also refreshing to see that in Australia, judges aren't keen to reduce sentences for abhorrent crimes. Son, a teenager, gets 14 years for rape of 16 year old girl... Father gets 14 years for trying to arrange to have the 16 year old rape victim killed (giving the instructions to the undercover Police officer to have her raped again, first, then shot in the eye then the forehead to maximise her pain). Sentence upheld As an aside, I wonder what ethnicity the offenders were... Their names weren't "John and David Smith". Yes, one wonders indeed. === http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,23142839-29277,00.html A MAN who tried to get a hitman to kill his teenage so…

It's nice to know that the Coroner is prepared to say that the attending Police had 'done nothing wrong' in a Police shooting. http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,23143145-29277,00.html February 01, 2008 12:31pm A DEPRESSED man shot dead by police had planned the deadly confrontation and officers acting in self-defence had done nothing wrong, a coroner has found. Lee Andrew Kennedy, 40, died after being shot in the chest by police who he had called to his home in Shepparton, Victoria, on April 19, 2005. Handing down her finding from the inquest into his death today, Coroner Audrey Jamieson said the police officer who fired the shot, Senior Constable Erin Levay, and …

http://au.news.yahoo.com/080120/21/15kzt.html The Western Australian Police Union says it is appalled by the amount of compensation offered to an officer who was bashed by a man wanted for a double murder in Victoria. Sergeant Shane Gray was attacked by William Watkins in January 2006 after stopping his car 20 kilometres south of Karratha to question him about leaving a petrol station without paying for fuel. Fearing for his life, Sergeant Gray shot Watkins dead. Sergeant Gray has been offered $34,000 in compensation, but the union says he should have received the maximum $75,000. Union President Mike Dean says moves to lodge an appeal for more money will start…

Hi there, good luck and I hope it all works out well for you. You are right to get as much paperwork done as you can. One thing with the certificates is watch the expiry, I guess it's better to have it, but depending on the lengthy residency process part of it may have expired prior to the application to the Police Service. One last thing on Ottawa .... snow snow SNOWWWWW and plenty of it

Here's a list of what I think is fairly unique examples of Australian Police slang. If you can think of any others, feel free to add them. Australian Police Slang Ambo An ambulance officer. As in "Can we have Ambos here, we've got a bleeder." Baggy-Arse A probationary Constable. So-called, because their uniform pants are brand new and baggy around the arse. As in "I was late two shifts running, so I got stuck with the baggy-arse for a week." Blue Heelers An awful, awful Australian drama show depicting the working and personal lives of the Police in the fictional small town of Mt. Thomas. As in "My missus watches that awful Blue Heelers show. I keep te…

Monday January 14, 07:53 PM Police may bill teen host of wild party Corey Delaney's wild party could cost him a $20,000 damages bill and his parents are threatening him with scary consequences. But the defiant 16-year-old has called on other teenagers to get him to organise their next party after his 500 guests caused mayhem in his suburban street in Melbourne's south-east on Saturday night. Police are considering billing him after 30 officers, a police helicopter and the dog squad were called to the party in Narre Warren South at about 11pm (AEDT). A day early by UK time, but it's 10.30 am on 25/12/2007 here in and the kids have torn through their presents already. If you're working today, be careful... There's a reason that some families only get together once a year and even worse they'll be fueled by alcohol today... (And for our UK brethren, it's going to be hot here today... No white Christmas for us!)

As a long time lurker, rare poster on this site, I'm often struck by a) the similarities of Policing in the UK and the differences. Obviously, the similarities are not surprising; complaining about shifts, complaining about crooks, complaining about bosses (in fact, I'm convinced that if coppers didn't complain, you'd think they were monks taking vows of silence) complaining about just about anything really. However, I'm struck mostly by the differences. And, to my mind, given those differences, I am very glad I do my policing on this side of the world. Like all other Australian Police Officers, I'm armed. Every now and then, these forums (and the comments …

Good riddance. http://au.news.yahoo.com/071213/2/1593v.html Corrupt cop jailed for over five years A corrupt former Crime Commission officer who admitted to involvement in fake drug busts will spend at least five and a half years in jail. Samuel Foster, 43, pleaded guilty in the NSW District Court to a string of drug, robbery, corruption and deception charges relating to fake drug busts. He was charged after a Police Integrity Commission investigation in 2004. Judge Deborah Sweeney sentenced Foster to seven-and-a-half years prison, with a non-parole period of five-and-a-half years. In sentencing, Judge Sweeney took into account help Foster had provided…
