Apparently the USA are not happy and it looks like we will be allowing them to bring in their own security, some of them armed. The pressure point seems to be on getting enough private security for the venues as their planning estimate was out by 10,000. Main pressure appears to be on Olympic Committee and G4s hiring enough staff etc etc http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2011/nov/13/us-worried-london-olympics-security-2012

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-15678275 A worthwhile endeavour, timed astutely to reduce Armistice day clashes? Or a pointless political move which does nothing to address the root issues?

It does beg the question whats this idiot doing up at 0830 in the morning! I've noticed that more crimes are being committed during daylight these days. There was a mother and grandmother with a baby who were mugged in the afternoon I think.

The man leading a review into police recruitment has spoken of claims that some officers present evidence in court cases that is "barely literate". Tom Winsor told the Police Superintendents Conference that some lawyers spoke in "contemptuous terms" of the quality of police evidence. He also suggested police entry tests were lower than they were 60 years ago. He said he had seen questions from 1930 and 1946 that were "very, very, very significantly harder" than today. The Home Office said it had no comment to make on Mr Winsor's remarks. Mr Winsor has been commissioned by the home secretary to review police pay and conditions in England and Wales. The former rail regul…

Derbyshire Police's free beer sting leads to 19 arrests An undercover police operation in which suspects were offered free beer has led to 19 arrests in Derbyshire. Officers sent letters to people who had evaded capture for months asking them to ring a marketing company. Suspects who fell for the hoax were put through to Chesterfield Police Station and a date arranged for the alcohol to be dropped off. Alleged offences of those arrested ranged from robbery to a serious sexual assault, police said. "These suspects are people who have managed to evade arrest for some time so we have used different tactics to find them," Ch Insp Graham McLaughlin said. "It has been ver…

The article is a bit confusing, because it switches from saying that anyone carrying a knife will receive a custodial sentence, to saying that anyone using it to threaten people will receive a custodial sentence. Judging from the context, I think it means the latter. And if so, I think it's a step in the right direction. We do need harsh sentencing for those who use knives offensively, even for those threatening it.
