Children arrested 64 times a week in Devon and CornwallDevon and Cornwall Police arrested children 64 times a week on average last year, figures obtained by the Howard League for Penal Reform reveal today. New research by the charity shows officers made 3,363 arrests of boys and girls aged 17 and under during 2011. However, in a huge success for the Howard League’s campaign to reduce the number of child arrests, the figures represent a fall of 39 per cent since 2008, when 5,495 were recorded. Frances Crook, Chief Executive of the Howard League for Penal Reform, said: “It is very pleasing to see that Devon and Cornwall Police is arresting fewer children than it has in the …

Just read this in my local rag and wondered what everyones thoughts were regarding the limited speed of LGV's? Highland HGV drivers protest against 40mph limit By Helen Bushnell HGV drivers Elaine Reid and Conor Mckenna with MSP David Stewart, who is supporting the increased limit HIGHLAND HGV drivers have joined forces to back a campaign for a new 50mph speed limit for lorries on single carriageways. Around 300 drivers in the Highlands have started a week-long protest today, by sticking rigidly to the 40mph they are currently restricted to travelling at on single carriageways such as the A9 and A96. The HGV drivers argue the current 40mph limit causes frustratio…

Cumbria's temporary Chief Constable Stuart Hyde is to remain suspended while an investigation into gross misconduct continues.Mr Hyde was suspended in September over complaints about his management style. The Independent Police Complaints Commission cleared him of the allegations in October. But the Cumbria Police and Crime Commissioner said he was still investigating and Bernard Lawson will continue to cover the role. A further review of Mr Hyde's suspension will be carried out in the next four weeks by South Wales Police. PCC Richard Rhodes said that the suspension was "a neutral act" to enable a full and thorough investigation. Mr Hyde said: "I have co-operated fu…

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-20576580 New criminal offences and tougher punishments have come into force in England and Wales. Highlights include mandatory life sentence for criminals committing a second serious sexual or violent offence. Also a new offence of aggravated knife possession. No doubt there are mixed views on this. In my opinion, the justice system is so weak in this country that anything is an improvement, so I think its a good idea. I know people talk about 'rehabilitation' but I'd just rather have these people off of the streets where they can't hurt more people. Also, mandatory life sentence for the second offence?? I'll believe it when I see it happen…

Whilst the loss of life is a shame, caused by their own driving, am I the only one that finds it a little bit too 'proactive' in removing this officers driving authority? He wasn't trying to pull them over, he wasn't even in sight of them and he certainly wasn't in a pursuit according to the article yet his authority has been suspended? Doesn't sit right with me that an officer now cannot drive because of a piece of beurocracy that says that because he was nearby and saw the vehicle before it crashed his authority gets taken off him. Of course there may be more to this than is reported but the facts as this article lists them make this decision seem uneccesarily beurocr…

No wonder the general public often think there is 'one law for police' and 'one law for everyone else'. The CPS should be made to explain why she is not being prosecuted for theft, and why there isn't likely to be a successful prosecution. http://www.kentonlin...chel_adams.aspx

Met's £3.5bn shopping list: Force under fire for wasting money on supplies everything from weapons to sandwiches The full scale of spending on private contractors by the UK's biggest police force is laid bare today as the nation's most senior officer is summoned by MPs to account for millions of pounds in wasted public money. A leaked list seen by The Mail on Sunday shows the Metropolitan Police has signed deals worth £3.5 billion with more than 300 companies, to supply everything from high-tech weaponry to sandwiches. The huge sums will be scrutinised when Met Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe appears before a powerful group of MPs on Tuesday, with Scotland Yard under p…
