Police told to take the bus to work, but community leaders say they lose up to 45 minutes every dayBobbies on the beat are losing up to 45 minutes every day getting the bus to their local areas, community leaders have complained. Instead of beginning their day at local police stations, dozens of neighbourhood police officers have been ordered to start their shift at the force’s Newton Heath headquarters. They must then commute to their patches using pubic transport, with the journeys taking up to 45 minutes. But police bosses have rejected claims that officers are being made to ‘waste’ valuable shift time – arguing it increases their public presence. The changes were …

A 21-year-old man who used the 999 emergency number to ask Tayside police to give him a lift home has been jailed for a total of 15 months.A 21-year-old man who used the 999 emergency number to ask Tayside police to give him a lift home has been jailed for a total of 15 months. Greg Smith was locked up after Perth Sheriff Court was told he had failed to carry out community-based sentences which had been imposed previously. Smith had admitted misusing the emergency call out number on 2 September 2011. Sheriff Lindsay Foulis told Smith he had "pushed me beyond the limit." Sheriff Foulis said: "All I can say is that you don't get it. It's not rocket science. You think yo…

Source: http://menmedia.co.u...---to-buy-drugs A corrupt detective who sneaked off duty to buy cocaine from a drug dealer was told he had badly let the public down as he was locked up for eight months. John ‘Sam’ Griffiths, formerly of Egerton Road South, Chorlton, snubbed a call to go a burglary in Warrington on Boxing Day last year, claiming he was ‘committed to an enquiry’. In reality, the 30-year-old was buying from Albanian pusher Bledi Malecaj, after driving to meet him in a police car. Three weeks later, colleagues from Cheshire Constabulary arrested Griffiths as he bought drugs from Malecaj in Manchester city centre. A Manchester Crown Court trial heard Grif…

Rocket found in car in Creggan, Derry 6 hours ago The bomb was found in a car in the Creggan area of Londonderry A senior police officer has said he has no doubt the home-made rocket found in a car in Londonderry was to be used to try and kill his officers. Chief Supt Stephen Martin said the device was of a type used extensively by insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan. Four men are being questioned after the rocket was found in Westway in the Creggan area at about 20:40 GMT on Thursday. Three were arrested in the car and the fourth nearby. "This a weapon which is used primarily to attack armoured vehicles and kill the occupants of those vehicles," Chief Supt Martin s…

OMG, OMG, OMG. There is a man on Sky News saying the Policing College should train the public to make citizens' arrests and intervene in ASB. Thankfully, there is also the obligatory former Met detective pointing out that this is fraught with danger and that most people don't really understand what an indictable offence is. I don't know whether to laugh, cry, or set up a compensation enquiry line for those who end up being subjected to these interventions!
