The herbal stimulant khat is to be banned by the government, against the advice of its own Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs. In January the ACMD said khat should remain a legal substance, saying there was "insufficient evidence" it caused health problems. But Home Secretary Theresa May has decided to ban it, saying the risks posed could have been underestimated. Khat will be treated as a class C drug - like ketamine and anabolic steroids. It is already banned in most of Europe and in a number of other countries, including the US and Canada. The UK's decision to follow suit is based on security and international considerations, in particular conc…

Don't know about you, but there would almost certainly be another dead body (of mine) if i ever witness "dead" person opening their eyes and starring at me!

I don't know if this was posted before, but the Medway Messenger reported the following on May 13th: "An 85-year-old woman has this afternoon been arrested after abuse was hurled at Muslims outside Gillingham Mosque. The pensioner was handcuffed and taken away in a van by officers attending the Canterbury Street mosque for Friday prayers." If you yell at a mosque, the coppers are already there. if you deface a London war memorial with Islamic slogans, the plods aren't anywhere in sight. As for the brutal murder of Private Lee Rigby (attended by unarmed police officers first on the scene); had this happened in the 1970s or early 1980s when I was a squaddie, the chances …

But Home Secretary Theresa May has decided to ban it, saying the risks posed could have been underestimated. Khat will be treated as a class C drug, like anabolic steroids and ketamine. The Home Office said the ban was intended to "protect vulnerable members of our communities" and would be brought in at the "earliest possible opportunity". Police officers who commit serious misconduct should have their pensions docked, a group of MPs has said. The Home Affairs Select Committee also called for a new code of ethics for all officers in England and Wales. Its report comes after the "plebgate" affair and a series of allegations about the conduct of undercover police. The Police Federation said integrity in policing was "paramount", but it was yet to be convinced a new code of ethics would make a difference. The committee said there were currently at least eight investigations under way as a result of police failings, which had so far cost £23m. And last week, it was alleged that undercover Metropolitan Police off…

Fire services could slash costs by sharing stations with police and ambulance crews, says former chief adviserMinisters should consider replacing the 46 local fire and rescue authorities in England with a single national organisation – as has happened in Scotland – according to a review of the £2.2bn-a-year emergency service. Mergers, privatisation, staff-led mutual organisations, sharing of stations with police and ambulance "blue light" operations, and greater use of part-time, on-call firefighters are among other options floated by Sir Ken Knight, the country's former chief fire and rescue adviser. He also said he would back a trial of whether police and crime commiss…

DARLINGTON residents are being offered the chance to take part in a scheme billed as the biggest shake-up in the criminal justice system for more than a century. Communities are being given new powers to deal with low-level crime, anti-social behaviour and neighbourly disputes. Neighbourhood Resolution (NR), as it is known, hands some of the power currently held by the police and courts back to communities. It is part of a new era of so-called ‘restorative justice’ and will see petty criminals brought before their victims to apologise and make amends – such as repairing damaged property. Proceedings will be overseen by a trained member of the public, instead of a memb…

Didn't anticipate this.... A 75-year-old man has been arrested after a home-made bomb was left near a mosque in Walsall. About 150 people were evacuated from homes near the mosque in Rutter Street after bomb disposal experts were called to the scene on Saturday evening. Neighbours described hearing a bang on Friday but it was only when a member of the public took the device inside the Aisha Mosque that police were called. The man was arrested at his home in Walsall on Thursday afternoon. He was detained on suspicion of causing an explosion likely to endanger life or damage property, West Midlands Police said. The suspect was taken to a police station in the West Mid…
