Two insurance companies have won their case against police bosses for compensation over the looting and arson of a building during the 2011 riots. They claimed the body responsible for the Met should pay for the damage caused to the Sony distribution centre in Enfield, north London. Legislation governing police says compensation for "damage by riot" should be paid out of police funds. The amount that will have to be paid is yet to be determined. The High Court ruled the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) was responsible under the Riot Damages Act. However the insurers for Sony had sought £49.5m for property, customer stock and business interruption while…

A prisoner who hurled a cup of urine over a sheriff has been ordered to serve more than four years. Gary Travers, 38, admitted attacking Sheriff John Rafferty from his cell door inside Airdrie Sheriff Court after he had refused to appear in the dock. Travers' four-year jail term for the assault will start when he has served 140 days from a previous sentence. The attack is believed to be the first on a sheriff or judge in a court building in Scotland. The High Court in Glasgow heard that Travers carried out the attack on 9 April this year after he had refused to leave his cell. Open hatch Sheriff Rafferty later decided to convene the court in the cell area so a heari…

An ambulance volunteer has been sacked for speeding while answering an emergency call. Godfrey Smith was a ‘first responder’ en route to help a man who had collapsed and was struggling to breathe. But the 64-year-old, who has attended more than 2,000 call-outs, was fired for travelling at 33mph in a 20mph zone. He said: ‘I am gobsmacked. It feels like they ripped my soul out. There was no thanks whatsoever for my 15 years of service.’ Mr Smith, from Faringdon, near Oxford, was in a high-visibility Land Rover when he exceeded the speed limit. His error came to light when a complaint was made that he drove around a bollard to get ahead of other traffic. He received a l…

Video from Crime watch on BBC! The original story! UPROAR erupted in Leeds Crown Court yesterday when a man who had lived a few doors away from seven-year-old Sunderland schoolgirl, Nikki Allen, was acquitted of her murder. The acquittal followed a six-week trial during which the judge had refused to admit an alleged confession by the defendant, George Heron, and accused the police of being 'oppressive' in the way they had interviewed him. Northumbria Police last night responded with a statement that the murder investigation had been 'a difficult one', but interviews had been conducted properly. The jury considered its verdict for seven and a hal…

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/history/world-war-one/10300545/WW1-poppy-plan-endorsed-by-David-Cameron-is-turned-down-for-funding.html - I wish I knew how the National Lottery worked out who they gave money to. They gave 80 million to the Royal Opera Society, a very priviliged outfit, visited mainly by the rich, but a youth club that had a membership if over 450 was refused £25,000 to repair their hut which was falling apart. They have awarded £95,000 to some organization that is going to research what 16,000 conscientious objectors(another word for cowards)did during the war. I could think of many better ways of spending 95 grand. Among them is the Peace Pledge Union …

Police use of Tasers in England and Wales more than doubled between 2009 and 2011, according to Home Office figures. The devices were used 7,877 times in 2011, compared with 3,328 in 2009. In only about a quarter (25.7% in 2011) were they actually discharged. In most situations they were only readied or pointed as a warning. The Independent Police Complaints Commission is probing 12 Taser-related incidents, three involving deaths. Tasers were first trialled in 2004 and their use has since been rolled out to all forces in England and Wales. Officers are required to take a training course before being allowed to use a Taser and they are told only to deploy them when th…
