http://news.sky.com/story/1209444/city-of-london-police-plan-more-undercover-ops Two decades after a "ring of steel" was put in place around the Square Mile, City of London Police have spent three years looking at the system of manned entry points into the area. Around 300,000 people work in the City of London every day And Assistant Commissioner of City of London Police Ian Dyson said the force now planned to make greater use of undercover teams and surveillance, and stage less predictable operations as part of the fight against terrorism and other serious crimes. "The ring of steel worked, it provided a deterrent, but it was getting tired," he said. "It was single …

The former head of communications at the Police Federation claims she was “unreasonably dismissed” after challenging “bulling and inappropriate attitudes” within the staff association. Fiona McElroy was dismissed on February 3 by senior Federation officials after she stated that her position was becoming “increasingly untenable”. In a statement Ms McElroy said that as part of her role she challenged “acts of bulling, inappropriate behaviours and attitudes” but that some within the organisation took exception to her role. Following her “unexpected and unreasonable dismissal” Ms McElroy said: “In the short time I worked there, all my efforts were undertaken in good faith…

THE genteel world of bulb catalogues, crochet demonstrations and garden parties have dominated the meetings of a North Yorkshire Women's Institute group over the last 12 months. But when Elaine Fay decided to liven up her local WI's programme, members were unprepared for the array of items their next guest speaker would bring - with guns, tasers, battering rams, CS canisters, stingers and stun grenades among the formidable weaponry on show. Sinderby WI usually sticks to the script for its fortnightly meetings in the village hall near Thirsk, in rural North Yorkshire, with previous activities living up to the group's 'jam and Jerusalem' image. After three years of tryin…

An MI5 agent praised by Tony Blair for playing a key role in the UK’s war on terror is suing the Government after being told that he can no longer live in Britain. The 33-year-old Moroccan-born agent worked for MI5 for six years, risking his life to prevent terror attacks on the UK. He infiltrated Islamic extremist cells and worked on investigations into the 7/7 attacks on London and the Madrid bombings as well as providing intelligence which led to the arrest of Al Qaeda terror suspects. Now the Home Office has told him he has no right to remain in Britain because ministers say he has a criminal record. His case is due to be heard at a high-profile immigration hearin…

Three police officers have been arrested for allegedly exchanging "extreme" pornographic images. The Metropolitan Police said three constables were arrested on 19 December suspected of involvement in "possession and distribution of obscene images". The officers are from the Diplomatic Protection Group, which guards foreign embassies and controls access to New Scotland Yard and Downing Street. One has been suspended and two have been put on "restricted duties". The officers, who are all male, allegedly sent each other picture messages using smart phones, and the Met said the images were "extreme" but did not involve children. After their arrest, the constables were qu…

A minister mistakenly signed a new law to allow England’s most notorious football hooligans to attend the World Cup finals this summer. Police Minister Damian Green thought the signature he put to the legal document would ban them from Brazil. But the dates were wrong and he barred them from just the opening day instead of the entire tournament. The blunder would have left 2,500 of the worst troublemakers free to cause mayhem, but thankfully one of Mr Green’s team spotted the mistake and redrafted the law with the correct dates. Every season thousands of fans arrested for hooliganism are given banning orders. And for each World Cup, police and Home Office off…

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2548413/30-years-police-face-inquiry-Battle-Orgreave-Fury-Hillsborough-style-probe-miners-strike.html I guess I am somewhat confused. I thought the IPCC was responsible for investigating current complaints and that an exception had been made for the Hillsborough inquiry. Is it now the case that IPCC will have a "cold case" unit to investigate historic incidents. Frankly, this seems outrageous to me and entirely a political move. Orgreave was an unpleasant affair but what is to be gained from opening up old wounds?

A former Nottinghamshire Police officer who had been convicted of a string of serious sexual offences has been acquitted of all charges following a re-trial. Trevor Gray, of Watnall, was found not guilty of rape, attempted rape and sexual touching of a 43-year-old woman following a four-day re-trial before Birmingham Crown Court. As previously reported, Mr Gray had been convicted of the allegations and was sentenced to eight years in prison in 2012. He had already been suspended and sacked from the force. The charges related to an alleged attack after Mr Gray and the woman had been on a night out. But following a successful appeal, the initial court finding was quas…
