Shifts victory for working mothers Working mothers were handed the legal right to refuse inconvenient shifts yesterday. A ground-breaking tribunal ruling will let any woman with young children claim she does not have to work early, late or at night. The new rights, under sexual discrimination laws, will be available to hundreds of thousands of women in both the public and private sectors. Firms with only small staffs will be exempt, but other employers will face major problems and extra costs trying to cater for mothers on their payroll. There is also likely to be anger and resentment among male colleagues and childless women who have to do the unpopular shifts. The…

SCOTLAND Yard wants to downgrade the importance of written English tests at police recruitment centres to make it easier for candidates from ethnic minorities to join the Met.Bosses believe people who do not have English as their first language are being discriminated against under current assessment rules. They have recommended the weighting placed on the “Written Communication” section of the Metropolitan Police’s tough entrance exam is lowered. However, they fear a “white backlash” among rank and file officers who feel they have already been passed over for promotion. Good job by all to bring a dangerous suspect under arrest, though no doubt the Guardian and its "we're living in a police state" readership will have something negative to say. After all we should be able to talk down every suspect (including thoses high on coke, in possession of a weapon and those who are trying to get away in a car) and if that doesn't work we have a short stick which always works. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex-25904646

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2546573/Im-victim-Shameless-thief-says-justice-let-victim-battered-cleared.html - I don't have much sympathy for the two crooks, if they had not stolen his property they would not have been injured. I do believe Woodhouse went slightly over the top, but credit to him for detaining the two criminals.

A detective who did not follow arrest guidelines in a double murder case has been found guilty of gross misconduct, the BBC has learned. Det Supt Steve Fulcher did not read Christopher Halliwell his rights before the former taxi driver led him to the body of Becky Godden in 2011. As a result, Halliwell was never charged over her death. In October 2012, Halliwell was jailed for life for the murder of 22-year-old Sian O'Callaghan. Mr Fulcher was brought before the formal misconduct hearing after an inquiry by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC). The IPCC found Mr Fulcher had breached the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (Pace) and it recommended Wilts…
