A 33-year-old man has been charged with the murder of prison officer David Black. Mr Black, a 52-year-old father of two, was shot dead on the M1 motorway in County Armagh as he drove to work at Maghaberry Prison in November 2012. He was the 31st member of the prison service to be killed in Northern Ireland, but it was the first such murder in almost 20 years. The man is to appear in court in Craigavon on Wednesday. He has also been charged with possession of a gun with intent to endanger life. The Police Service of Northern Ireland thanked their colleagues in the Garda, the Republic of Ireland's police force, for their help in the investigation which spanned the two …

Day after day now we read about those poor people who are suffering from the floods in the Somerset area, and about their calling for rivers to be dredged. The various authorities in HMG are saying that there is no money to do it. Er....hang on, wasn't there something about one HS2 rail link being talked about. The cost being quoted was horrendous and will probably be far more by the end of the day. From what I have read there are very few people indeed in favour of installing the rail link just to get a small amount of time knocked off people's journeys. Surely HMG could afford the flood defences if they wanted to (maybe they just don't want to)it would certainly cost a …

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2546573/Im-victim-Shameless-thief-says-justice-let-victim-battered-cleared.html I think justice might well be best served if this scrote's picture was used in a poster campaign to remind others with ill-intentioned ideas that there might well be severe consequences to being a thief! I feel really sorry NOT for this character that he can no longer go fishing - presumably he was doing that and walking his dog whilst claiming benefits ..............................

Former chief attacks misconduct probe Some of the allegations against me were "petty nonsense", says former Cumbria chief Stuart Hyde. The former chief constable who was suspended for nearly a year while matters against him were investigated - only for the probe to conclude he had not committed misconduct - has criticised how the matter was handled. Stuart Hyde (pictured), who had been appointed to the top role at Cumbria in a temporary capacity, said he was left “shocked” a few months into his tenure when he was suddenly sent home from work in September 2012. He revealed that he had then been planning to apply to become the permament chief. In an interview with P…

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-25939908 Ban on smoking in cars carrying children backed by LordsThe Lords has backed a Labour plan to ban smoking in cars carrying children, despite opposition from the government. Labour peers tabled an amendment to the Children and Families Billdetailing their proposal for England, which they said was about "protecting children". Ministers had argued that the new law was a "blunt instrument" and public information campaigns were preferable. But the BBC understands that government backbenchers will not be pressed to reverse the change in the Commons. Instead, they will have a free vote on the amendment when the bill returns to …
