Return to News 26 September 2018 A Derby man has been jailed in France for heading up a criminal network that smuggled hundreds of migrants into the UK. Rekawt Kayani, aged 36, was arrested by National Crime Agency officers at his home address in the Normanton area of Derby in May 2016, as part of a joint operation being run with the French police. He was involved in numerous smuggling runs including one in June 2015 when 68 migrants from Afghanistan, China and Vietnam were found inside four lorries at the Harwich International Port. Police seized more than 70kg of cocaine and £100,000 in cash stashed in shoeboxes in a raid in east London. The drugs haul, with a street value of £3.5 million, was found when officers from the Met’s Violent Crime Taskforce swooped on an address in Romford last night. Detectives also recovered a loaded handgun. Three men aged 24, 27 and 53, and two women aged 25 and 53, were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to supply cocaine, possession of criminal property and possession of a firearm and ammunition. John Buwalda, 54, was jailed for 23 years in December 2016 following an investigation by the joint National Crime Agency and Metropolitan Police Organised Crime Partnership (OCP). Ukrainian national Sergiy Mykhaylov was arrested in June 2018 by National Crime Agency surveillance officers outside his workplace in Queen’s Yard, Hackney. Police have launched a £2 million unit to plan for a hard-Brexit amid warnings that it will be harder to protect the public after Britain leaves the EU. Senior officers say investigators will lose access to 40 crime fighting tools, including the European Arrest Warrant, which would hinder cross-border investigations such as the hunt for the Russian intelligence officers suspected of the Salisbury Novichok attack. Return to News Gholamreza Pourmirzaei, aged 46, from Manchester, was stopped by Border Force officers at Stansted Airport on 21 November 2016 after flying to the UK from Turkey. An x-ray revealed the Class A drug was hidden in the lining at the bottom of his suitcase. On the same day NCA officers searched Pourmirzaei’s home in Kippax Street, Manchester, and seized £3,965 cash. The NCA investigation revealed that Pourmirzaei had travelled to Turkey and Iran on 31 occasions in 2016.
