A mother who was taken to court after refusing to pay a £75 fine for dropping a piece of sausage roll on the pavement has had her case dismissed. The young mother said the pastry was eaten by pigeons Sarah Davies, 20, was stopped by council officials after she dropped the pastry while giving it to her daughter Chloe, aged four, in Hull city centre. Miss Davies, of Beverley Road, was charged with littering after refusing to pay the fixed penalty notice. Hull magistrates dismissed her case at a hearing earlier. I hope social services take an interest in this. What kind of parents keep an airgun insecurely with young children around?! No wonder some elements of society behave the way they do...

I was reading The Scum a couple of days ago and firstly you have to remember the old saying, " If it's in The Sun it must be true! " The article related to the killer of head teacher Philip Lawrence, Learco Chindamo. The paper reports that Chindamo has been released from prison into a new life costing the tax-payer millions of pounds. The release is belived to have been carried out under Multi Agency Public Protection Arrangements. He has been moved to a secret location, given a living allowence, a car and provided with a panic alarm system to the Police. Why has this cold blooded murderer been given all this at the cost to the tax-payer Yet another kick in the t…

From Police Oracle A new streamlining of police powers for frontline officers to cut red tape, improve efficiency and protect the rights of the public was set out by Home Office Minister Tony McNulty. Measures in a review of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) include reducing bureaucracy and increasing accountability on stop and search, simplifying pre-charge bail and speeding-up the interviewing of juveniles. The proposals come after a consultation which found that PACE is valued and endorsed by the public and police. The consultation board - which included the Association of Chief Police Officers, Association of Police Authorities and the Police Federati…

Police sick days cost taxpayers £23m each year Aug 24 2008 By Norman Silvester Sunday mail HUNDREDS of Scots police are calling in sick every day - costing taxpayers at least £23million a year. A Sunday Mail investigation today reveals that 153,774 days were lost to sickness last year, with 420 officers off on an average day. And the true figure could be even higher because our study is based on just six of the country's eight forces. The Scottish Police Federation last night blamed forces for failing to protect officers from stress and the growing number of attacks while on duty. Chairman Norrie Flowers said: "The role of a police officer is increasingly dang…

The gun shown here, a Webley, is up for sale in London for £150, one of hundreds of such weapons that are easily and cheaply available on the streets of the UK's big cities, a Guardian investigation can reveal. The variety of weapons on offer in Britain is extensive and includes machine guns and shotguns, as well as pistols and converted replicas. A source close to the trade in illegal weapons contacted by the Guardian listed a menu of firearms that are available on the streets of the capital. "You can get a clean [unused] 9mm automatic for £1,500, a Glock for a couple of grand and you can even make an order for a couple of MAC-10s," he said. "Or you can get a litt…

TAKEAWAY worker has been jailed for sexual contact with a 14-year-old girl after they kissed under a bridge in Derby River Gardens. Derby Crown Court heard Mohammed Ramzan was "an immature man of 20" at the time of the offence and thought the girl was 16, although he had no proof about her age. Clive Stockwell, prosecuting, said the pair exchanged text messages and met in the River Gardens after the girl finished school for the day. They went under the bridge, kissed and "got off with one another" as the girl later described it. Ramzan touched intimate parts of her body and the pair "left on good terms", said Mr Stockwell. When social services heard of the incident, …

The country's most senior Asian police officer has lodged a £1.2m claim of racial discrimination against his own force, BBC News understands. Assistant Commissioner Tarique Ghaffur lodged the claim against the Metropolitan Police with an employment tribunal on Friday. He claims he was discriminated against on grounds of race, religion and age. The Metropolitan Police (Met) said they could not comment until they received details of the claim. Mr Ghaffur is head of security planning for London's 2012 Olympics. His claim is understood to be for £1.2m in loss of earnings and damages. 'Saddened' In June he made a number of allegations against the Met, which inc…

It comes as no surprise to me that British motorists are seen as a menace in France. With the reckless abandon of Mr Toad, they race along the French roads, ignoring the speed limits, and are surprised and indignant when stopped by the police. "The mentality of letting go across the Channel seems to be the same one that makes les Anglais get drunk as soon as they leave their country," said one philosophical French police officer (who clearly doesn't know that we get just as drunk at home). Thanks to growing poverty and high petrol prices, there is reported to have been a slight alleviation of traffic congestion in Britain, but the freedom offered by France's long, straig…
