September 12, 2008 Richard Ford, Home Correspondent Rudeness, unanswered calls and stations that are shut have fuelled public disenchantment with the police, a leading officer said yesterday. Ian Johnston, president of the Police Superintendents’ Association, said that public confidence in the police in England and Wales had been “dented and bruised†by bad behaviour and the service had to improve. Too many officers had allowed “pride and ego†to get in the way of the improvements that were necessary in dealing with the public. “While officers continue to work hard and some pay the ultimate price, the brutal truth is that there are too many occasions when …

No jail for child abuse image Police Officer Source: BBC Merseyside A former police officer who downloaded indecent images of children has been given a suspended prison sentence. Pc Marc Mitchell downloaded 126 images out of "morbid curiosity" after taking part in a police inquiry into such pictures, Liverpool Crown Court heard. Describing him as a "crushed man", the judge sentenced him to eight months in jail, suspended for two years. Mitchell, who pleaded guilty to the charges, was dismissed by Merseyside Police in November 2007. The court heard that Mitchell was caught by an Austrian police investigation into a child pornography website in 2007. Offenders…

Lawyers acting for an unidentified Belfast child have won the right to challenge Sir Hugh Orde's decision to deploy tasers in Northern Ireland. The police bought 12 of the stun guns in January for use in a pilot scheme - and one was used for the first time in Londonderry last month. At the High Court in Belfast on Friday, the lawyers were granted leave for a judicial review of the decision to use them. The case will be heard in January. Lawyers for the applicant claim there was a failure to carry out a proper equality impact assessment before tasers were brought in. They also alleged the introduction breached the right to life and right to freedom from torture u…

Child abusers are increasingly resorting to online threats and blackmail instead of 'grooming' children, a specialist police child protection agency warns. The UK's Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre said that online child abuse offenders are turning from winning their intended victims' trust with gifts and inducements, in favour of hacking into social networking profiles and email accounts in order to blackmail children into acquiescing to abuse. CEOP reckons the change is happening partly because youngsters are becoming more savvy about conventional grooming tactics, and more willing to report concerns to police agencies. The increasing popularity of soci…

NEW YORK — Nearly seven years after terrorists took down the World Trade Center's twin towers, police officials have embarked on an ambitious plan to secure the new development that is finally sprouting at ground zero. But a repeat of the horrors of Sept. 11, 2001 is only one of a long list of worries that have prompted the New York Police Department to spend the last several years reinventing itself as an intelligence and homeland security agency. The nation's largest police department, with about 37,000 officers, has spent tens of millions of dollars - much it from federal grants - on an array of high-tech security measures designed to thwart threats potentially m…

Thousands of people with mental health problems are being detained in police cells rather than being taken to hospital for assessment, a report says. Over a year, more than 11,500 people were held in police custody for assessment under the Mental Health Act - double the number taken to hospital. The Independent Police Complaints Commission collated data for all 43 police forces in England and Wales. IPCC commissioner Ian Bynoe said the situation was "intolerable". Section 136 of the Mental Health Act enables officers to take someone they believe is suffering from a mental disorder, and in need of immediate care or control, from a public place to a "place of safety" wh…
