Tony Blair's former close protection officer has been "removed from operational duties" after leaving a gun in a coffee shop, police said. A member of the public found the pistol, believed to be a semi-automatic Glock 17, in the toilets of a Starbucks cafe in central London. The police firearms officer has now been suspended from duty while an investigation is carried out, the Metropolitan police confirmed. It is believed that the gun was left on the floor of the cafe's only toilet for 20 minutes last Friday. The officer involved, who was once Tony Blair's close protection officer, is thought to be a high-flying female officer in her 30s. The Sun newspaper reported t…

The review is examining the scope for establishing a framework of powers of entry for non-police agencies. The Prime Minister in his liberty speech of 25 October 2007 (new window) announced that a review would be carried out on the powers of entry to dwellings and businesses. He said: 'There are a surprisingly high number - at least 250 - of provisions granting power to enter homes and premises without permission. This high number reflects how often they are drawn very narrowly - not least because of our traditional respect for liberty and privacy. I share the concerns about the need for additional protections for the liberties and rights of the citizen. And I believe …

Warnings over bogus police cars Motorists have been warned to be certain they are stopping for police when flagged down by a car displaying a flashing blue light. The alert came from Suffolk police after a lorry driver was assaulted in an attempted robbery after pulling over to the side of the A14 at Claydon. The lorry driver had responded to signals from an unmarked car before the car driver attacked him on Tuesday. Motorists are urged to leave their cars only when identification has been seen. Police urged motorists who think they are being asked to stop by an unmarked police car to take the following steps: Continue to drive sensibly Stop only when it…

Obese criminals are more likely to leave their fingerprints at crime scenes because of the amount of salty food they eat. A police boffin has developed a new way of examining the corrosion on bullet casings and knife blades that is caused by minuscule amounts of salt in hand sweat, according to the Daily Telegraph. Dr John Bond said that because processed grub typically contains much larger quantities of salt, anyone overfond of bad burgers will leave more forensic evidence. "The more salt in your body the more corrosion there will be on the shell casing,†he said. “We can visualise fingerprints even after they have been removed because of the corrosion to the surfa…

Life sentence for gun factory man I'd copy and paste the article here but the computers in the work don't like that for some reason...... Essence of the story is that a male was convicted of converting replica MAC10 submachine guns into weapons capable of firing live rounds. TVP reckons that the converted weapons were used in eight murders - one was used in the robbery in which PC Beshenivsky was murdered - and they reckon another thirty to forty such weapons are unaccounted for.

Story from BBC NEWS: http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/pr/fr/-/1/hi/wales/7589953.stm Thought this might be of interest to someone. I would say something clever about the argument of national service solving the nation's ills but it's far too early in the morning for that sort of thing! I certainly wouldn't fancy my chances trying to arrest an ex-squaddie!

Well at least cocaine use is predicted to go down!! Typical that they don't seem bothered about increasing the budget available to police authorities even though they believe there will be a significant rise in crime.

The continued race row between Tarique Ghaffur and Ian Blair plumbs new depths: Article from The Times Online This is getting really quite incredible. These are paid Civil Servants, allegedly at the top of their game, who are engaging in a quite remarkable pre-Court slagging match in public. Regardless of whether or not Mr. Ghaffur's allegations are proved to be founded, I can't help but wonder if this whole unpleasant episode is doing more damage to race relations than anything that Ian Blair could possible have engineered. The thing that makes me really uncomfortable is - having a look through all of the papers today and online - is that a large number of people h…
