Asian police chief in race claim The country's most senior Asian police officer has lodged a £1.2m claim of racial discrimination against his own force, BBC News understands. Assistant Commissioner Tarique Ghaffur lodged the claim against the Metropolitan Police with an employment tribunal on Friday. He claims he was discriminated against on grounds of race, religion and age. The Metropolitan Police (Met) said they could not comment until they received details of the claim. Police to launch 'work to rule' The police are currently banned from going on strike Police officers in England and Wales are to "work to rule" after talks over this year's pay deal broke down. The Police Federation will ask its 140,000 members to work to their conditions of employment. The move could leave forces short of manpower, although it is not expected to affect major criminal inquiries. The Police Federation has described the government's offer of a 2.325% pay rise as an "insult", after making a demand of a 3.5% increase. Sophie Lancaster was murdered and her boyfriend seriously injured in east lancashire. Today her killers have been given leave to appeal their sentences on grounds of them being unduly harsh due to their age. Both recieved sentences of around 16 years. (dont know the exact tariff. In my opinion these sentences are too light already, they should be serving 25 yers plus for their crimes. Any thoughts?

The serving Northumbria Police officer is one of 14 people arrested at addresses in the North East, Greater Manchester and Lothian and Borders. Disgraced singer Gary Glitter will be met by police on his return to the UK next week. The convicted child molester will be released from jail in Vietnam on Tuesday and flown to London, his lawyer said. Glitter, real name Paul Gadd, was sentenced to three years in prison by a Vietnamese court in March 2006.
