Crete police get tough on drunk Britons Published Date: 07 August 2008 By Paul Anast Scotsman POLICE on the holiday island of Crete have launched a campaign of pre-emptive arrests of drunken British tourists in an attempt to cut the number of rapes and other violent crimes before they take place. The crackdown was announced following the arrest of more than 500 Britons in the resort of Mallia at the beginning of May. Most were given light sentences, fined and released. The number of Germans, French, Italians or Russians arrested are "minute by comparison", according to officials. Captain Yannis Milathianakis told The Scotsman yesterday that in the preceding 24 hour…

The number of people killed by drinking and driving has fallen by almost a fifth, government statistics reveal. Latest figures from the Department for Transport show fatalities were down 18% - from 560 in 2006 to 460 in 2007. The number of serious injuries also fell, from 1,970 in 2006 to 1,760 last year - a fall of 11%. But an increase in more minor incidents saw the total number of drink and driving deaths and injuries rise by 220 cases a year to 9,620 - a 2% increase. The number of fatalities is now lower than it has been since 1999. Transport Minister Rosie Winterton said: "Drink driving ruins lives. That is why it is such good news that the number of people…

A Labour MP has condemned a decision by Kent Police to let officers wear riot gear during a clash with activists at an environmental protest camp. Bob Marshall-Andrews said he was horrified by the footage he saw showing police and campaigners clashing at the Kingsnorth plant on the Hoo peninsula. Activists gathered at the site to halt plans by E.ON UK to demolish the plant and replace it with a coal-fired unit. The force said officers needed the gear to protect themselves from missiles. But, following an hour-long meeting with senior officers, Mr Marshall-Andrews said the decision to use shields and helmets was "provocative and heavy-handed". A group of hardco…

Kelvin Bennett, 45, of Dart Street, Birmingham, had denied kidnap and rape while working at Dover in 2000. Kent Police said Bennett had totally betrayed his position of trust. He will be sentenced o…

A decision to overturn the whole-life term for Pc Ian Broadhurst's killer was "shockingly disrespectful to his memory", says the Police Federation. In a letter to the Lord Chief Justice, chairman Paul McKeever said the judges who granted ex-US marine David Bieber's appeal had "blood on their hands". Bieber shot Pc Broadhurst in the head in Leeds on Boxing Day 2003, despite the officer pleading for his life. Last month, Bieber was told he will now serve a minimum of 37 years in jail. The original whole life tariff imposed would have meant Bieber dying behind bars. The Court of Appeal said the facts of Bieber's case, "horrifying though they were", did not justify a "li…

Trial proves it: Bobbies on the beat cut crime Published Date: 06 August 2008 By ADAM MORRIS Edinburgh Evening News IT is a policing tactic that has been used across the world for centuries, but now police in Leith have found that having bobbies on the beat really is the most effective way of clamping down on crime. Following a week-long trial at a notorious hotspot, during which "high visibility" officers patrolled the foot of Leith Walk with a no-nonsense attitude, five people were arrested and 26 searched. Police said not only had the pilot cleared out the alcoholics and drug users who frequent the public toilets there, but it also resulted in charges being brou…

The five members of the Worcestershire-based Johnson traveller family, stole in several counties. The judge described a raid at Ramsbury Manor, near Marlborough, Wiltshire, as the UK's biggest ever private burglary. Prosecutor Paul Reid described the men as an "extensive and highly organised gang" who were "ruthless in their…

Sergeant Karl Cliff, 42, of Merseyside Police, admitted misconduct in a public office last month and was given a suspended eight-month jail sentence. A Merseyside Police spokesman confirmed on Tuesday the officer has been sacked. He had previously been suspended by the force. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/west_yo...ire/7539352.stm but Shami Chakrabarti has really out done herself this time - "Shami Chakrabarti, director of the human rights organisation Liberty, said: "This heinous murderer is subject to imprisonment for the rest of his life, and will be nearly 80 years old before there is any possibility of parole, providing he poses no risk to the public. "Police officers, like judges, serve the rule of law, which protects everyone. "Mr McKeever (Fed. chairman) should reflect on the wisdom of showing such disdain for it." " You wonder why we bother some days.

'Pub ban' order for wife killer The jury had heard that Flaherty had no recollection of throttling his wife A judge has told a Glasgow pensioner that stopping him going to the pub was a "more meaningful" sentence than a prison term for killing his wife. Edward Flaherty, 74, was convicted of strangling 69-year-old Ina Flaherty with a tie after she refused to give him money to go out drinking. Lord Matthews said Flaherty's dementia made him unsuited to prison. He imposed a year-long restriction of liberty order which will keep him inside his home during opening hours. The pensioner will be tagged and banned from leaving his home in the city's Drygate area betwee…
