A police officer has been airlifted to hospital after accidentally shooting himself in the hand. The firearms officer, who has not been named, received a gunshot wound while cleaning the weapon at Wiltshire Police headquarters in Devizes. No-one else was hurt during the incident and the injured officer was flown to Frenchay Hospital, Bristol, for treatment. The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating the matter. A police spokesman said it was believed the incident was the "result of the unintentional discharge of his weapon during a cleaning process at the end of his tour of duty". BBC News

A police community support officer's Cambridgeshire home was mistakenly targeted as a cannabis factory by a force helicopter's infra-red camera. The home of Sawston PCSO Zally Huseyen, 46, was emitting so much heat police thought it could be cultivating industrial quantities of the drug. But officers later found the heat coming from the Lower Cambourne home was because of insufficient insulation. The firm which built the house said it complies with "all relevant standards". A senior West Midlands police officer who described BMWs as "black man's wheels" to fellow officers has been demoted a rank to chief inspector. Ch Insp Chris Pretty had been given a miniature BMW for his collection of model cars at a leaving do at the Tally Ho police training centre last year. The former superintendent is believed to be considering appealing. West Midlands Police said it expected the highest standards of professionalism from all officers. Police probe after horse's tail cut off Edinburgh Evening news POLICE are investigating after a horse had part of its tail cut off at a farm in the Lothians. More than a foot of the animal's tail was removed during the incident, which took place in Currie on June 5. Officers have been unable to locate the people involved and said they are not ruling out any possibilities regarding the motive for the attack. Lancashire Constabulary is to become the first force in the country to introduce digital recording and storage of suspect interviews. The train involved was the 08:47 First Great Western service from Swindon to Weston Super Mare, which was travelling at approximately 60mph. The driver of the train applied emergency brakes, but was unable to avoid striking a man on the tracks. Police can confirm the man died at the scene and are not treating the incident as suspicious. In summary: 141,859 full time police officers (33 less than same time last year) 14,547 Special Constables Police staff went up by 2.4% to 76,948 PCSOs 18,505 - up by 17.1% The attached report has a breakdown of officers by force, including Specials - makes interesting reading! This idea is fantastic, I always dreaded sealing the tapes following an interview as I always managed to make a mess of the sticky cover It was always time consuming entering all the tapes into the library when I was a Detention Officer, especially if it was a very busy shift. Source

A police sergeant from Cambridgeshire has been charged with sexually abusing a schoolgirl. Dominic Liversedge, who is based at Parkside police station in Cambridge, is accused of having sexual activity with a child. Mr Liversedge, 27, has been suspended by Cambridgeshire Constabulary on full pay, a police spokeswoman said.
