Det Sgt Wendell Henry made the claim on BBC South East Today after a report about two black men who said they were strip searched without justification. Kent Police Federation chairman Ian Pointon said the comments were "dangerous, insulting and baseless". But Det Sgt Henry said he had since been thanked by dozens of officers. Alcohol retailers are routinely guilty of "irresponsible and harmful practices", a report commissioned by the government says. These include venues admitting under-18s, promoting alcohol with cut-price offers and serving people who are "blatantly intoxicated". The study, drawn up by auditors KPMG, concludes that the industry's voluntary code is "not fit for purpose". The Home Office said it would introduce legislation if standards were not met. 'Encouraged drunkenness' To prepare the report, a team of researchers visited nearly 600 pubs, bars, nightclubs, off-licences and supermarkets in England over a five-day period. Practices observed "frequently" by the survey t…

Police road traffic deaths halved Deaths from road accidents involving police in England and Wales have fallen by more than half in two years to 23, figures are expected to show. But Nick Hardwick, who chairs the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), said the figure was still "too high". In 12 months to the end of March 2008, there were 17 fatal crashes involving police, according to IPCC statistics. The figures are the lowest since the IPCC began compiling them in 2004. BBC home affairs correspondent Danny Shaw said the drop may be linked to tougher guidance and training on police pursuits, when most of the road deaths occur. Last year, the IPCC s…

Police 'to be freed from targets' Source: BBC News (17/07/2008) Police are to be given greater freedom from red tape and targets under a government "new deal" launched by Home Secretary Jacqui Smith. All but one of the national targets imposed on forces will be scrapped under the Green Paper reforms, allowing officers more time to tackle crime. Ms Smith said removing "top down" targets was "a significant mark" of her trust in senior police chiefs. The Tories said the government's proposals were mainly "rehashed". Launching the reforms in the House of Commons, Ms Smith told MPs the police were at a crossroads and faced "unprecedented challenges" from terrorism and…
