http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/notting...ire/7768142.stm We've had some of the best debates ever in the last few weeks, both about the BNP and the leaking of information. And this news story kinda links the themes together. I'm scratching my head as to what my own views are on this. Whilst I feel strongly the people on the list should not face any discrimination for being BNP members, I also have absolutely no sympathy for them. So what do I feel about the people that leaked the list? I am not sure . . . Nonetheless, I am surprised that someone has been arrested under the Data Protection Act, which is an interesting development around the responsibilities of hand…

I'm sure you have all heard the news about the arrest of an MP and the serach of his offices. I was reading what the Speaker said and I was wondering what would happen if the Speaker refused to allow access to the MP's office in Westminster. Its not like the police could raid his office. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7763138.stm Also I read an article about how the Tories hired a compnay to sweep for bugs at the MPs offices in Westminster: Surely the security of the building is the responsibility of the MET police CO7? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7768372.stm

Six Metropolitan Police officers will appear in court on Monday after an incident in which a group of men claimed they were racially abused. The six, from the force's Territorial Support Group, have been summonsed to appear before Kingston magistrates. Two are charged with racially abusing the men. Four others are accused of misconduct in a public office. Three men complained that racist language was used during an incident in Paddington, west London, in June, 2007. One officer is also accused of a racially-aggravated assault. An Independent Police Complaints Commission spokesman said they had not been identified because of "concerns" surrounding their names. …

Mother guilty over Shannon plot The trial heard that Matthews had "lied and lied and lied again" to police The mother of Shannon Matthews has been found guilty of charges relating to her daughter's disappearance. Karen Matthews, 33, and her co-accused Michael Donovan, 40, were convicted of kidnap, false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice. They sparked a massive police search costing £3.2m when Ms Matthews reported Shannon missing in February. The nine-year-old was held at Donovan's flat in Batley Carr, West Yorkshire, for 24 days. The 13-day trial at Leeds Crown Court heard the pair kept Shannon "drugged, subdued and hidden from the public" so th…

An Essex boss who discovered one of his employees had stolen and cashed a company cheque frogmarched the miscreant to a police station with his hands tied behind his back and a sign round his neck reading "thief", the Times reports. Carpet fitter Mark Gilbert, 39, swiped the cheque from Witham-based In House Flooring, wrote it out for £845 and "cashed it for holiday spending money". The cheque subsequently bounced, since it was from a redundant business account, and when the crime was discovered, Gilbert says he was "punched and threatened with tools" before being subjected to the march of shame through Witham town centre. He admitted his crime and was cautioned, but h…

Drinkers and festive revellers on the streets of Bolton are being given bubble-blowers to stop them causing trouble as they make their way home. The light-hearted scheme has a serious message for drinkers who are being urged not to get involved in violence or make too much noise. Blue and orange pens will be handed out and double as bubble-blowers. Councillor Elaine Sherrington said the aim of Operation Sherry was to keep people as "as safe as possible". 'Light-hearted' The pens will be handed out by police community support officers and town centre ambassadors. The Be Safe Partnership, which includes police, the fire service and council, is running Operation …

The jury at the inquest into the death of Jean Charles de Menezes will not be able to consider a verdict of unlawful killing, the coroner has said. Sir Michael Wright made the ruling as he began his summing up on Tuesday. Mr de Menezes, 27, was shot dead at Stockwell Tube Station by police officers who mistook him for one of the failed 21 July 2005 bombers. The 11-strong jury has heard from 100 witnesses since the inquest began at the Oval Cricket Ground in September. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7760684.stm ------------------------- I was personally hoping more of a line would be drawn under these unfortunate events. More trouble looms I fear.

The Sunday Times online at http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/poli...icle5204516.ece is carrying a very interesting story that the Home Secretary is about to Role out 30000 tasers across the police service to arm response officers. I am curious now as to if the service intends to train specials who carry out response duties to be armed with a Taser or have access, I can see some very good advantages in this especially in certain situations when dealing with violent offenders and public order situations at weekends. At the end of the day Specials are armed with Batons, CS and Handcuffs, so why not Taser as well. C.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/c...icle4842434.ece The cost to the public purse of giving London’s police officers a free ride on the railways has risen to £24 million a year, The Times has learnt. The Metropolitan Police is facing Whitehall pressure over the cost of the perk, which enables its 31,000 officers to travel up to 50 miles (80km) beyond London without having to buy a ticket, even if they are off duty. Officers just show their warrant cards to inspectors. With police forces around the country being told to make efficiency savings, the future of ticketless rail travel for the Met is under review. Scotland Yard confirmed that its contract for …

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7755974.stm "I may sound strangely medieval, but once the police can interfere with Parliament, I tell you, you are into a police state " I disagree, your in a state where MP`s cannot get away with anything dubious. Not that this person has done anything wrong, innocent till proven otherwise.

But now part of the Scotland Street rail tunnel is to be transformed into a youth club under plans being backed by the police. The section of tunnel at the foot of the street would be converted to provide a facility for young people in an area with no significant provision. Pc Simon Daley, who is spearheading the project, said: "Young people are often given a bad name, portraye…
