Police officers rushed to hospital after a suspicious substance was thrown through a car window were released when it was identified as HP sauce. The Metropolitan Police said officers responded to reports of an "unusual smell" coming from a car with a smashed window in Enfield, north London. They saw an unknown brown substance inside and those who came into contact with it were taken to hospital. No arrests have been made over the incident in the early hours of Friday. The spokesman said: "Officers who came into contact with the substance were taken to hospital as a precautionary measure. "The substance was eventually identified as a harmless food substance." …

A police officer has been charged with death by dangerous driving after a woman died when she was hit by a marked police car. Sandra Simpson, 61, was knocked down by the car close to her home in Bromley, south-east London, in August. Pc Malcolm Searles, 23, has been charged with death by dangerous driving, three counts of dangerous driving and three counts of speeding. He is due appear at Westminster City Magistrates' Court on Thursday. The charges against the officer, based at Bromley station, follow an investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission. BBC

Police officers capture giant pet Police in Kent have captured a giant runaway rabbit after it was spotted in the middle of a busy road in Canterbury in the early hours of Sunday. It took several failed attempts before two police officers took off their coats to stage a bullfighting manoeuvre on the lost pet. Kent Police said several passers-by were needed to help capture the bunny who has been nicknamed Tiny. Pcs Matt Jackson and Yasmin Mossadegh spotted the animal in Northgate. Blood and items left near the body of a man found dead by Michael Barrymore's swimming pool were not properly investigated, a report has found. Stuart Lubbock, 31, died at the entertainer's home in 2001. The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) inquiry noted two pieces of evidence - a pool thermometer and a door handle - were not seized. Police also failed to "promptly investigate" blood left on the victim's boxer shorts, towels and a robe. The IPCC upheld six of 36 complaints and allegations made by Stuart's father, Terry Lubbock. An off-duty police officer was seriously attacked on a train in West Sussex after trying to stop a group of youths verbally abusing passengers. British Transport Police (BTP) said the fight was on a Portslade-Lancing train. Pc Jason Scrase said youths who boarded the train with full pint glasses turned on the officer when he tried to stop their anti-social behaviour on Friday. Four people were later arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm and assaulting a police officer. Police fear UK 'summer of rage' Police are preparing to face a "summer of rage" in the UK as people join protests over the economic downturn, says a senior Met Police officer. "Known activists" were likely to foment unrest, with the recession creating more "footsoldiers" to join them, Supt David Hartshorn told the Guardian. A Metropolitan Police officer has been arrested in south Wales over the illegal supply of steroids. The 26-year-old constable was one of five people taken into custody after raids in Swansea early on Monday. The arrests followed an investigation by anti-corruption officers into a network supplying hundreds of people. The officer was held on suspicion of supplying controlled class C drugs. Steroids are legally available within the UK only from a pharmacist.
