SmartWater shows up under ultra-violet light A North Wales Police station is the latest to install technology to allow burglary and theft suspects to be scanned for incriminating evidence. St Asaph station, which covers Denbighshire and Conwy, now has UV lighting to detect any traces of a chemical called SmartWater. The force has seen more businesses and schools using a spray device with the water to protect their property. The scheme has also been successfully used in other UK police forces. Mr Shafiq made the call en-route to Thompson Park in Burnley where he attempted to act as peacemaker between his son and a man who had waged a bullying vendetta against him. The call l…

Surrey Police are to cut more than 140 jobs, saying government under-funding has made it increasingly difficult to protect front-line services. The police authority has said it will axe 144 officers and staff jobs in 2009/2010 mainly by cutting bureaucracy and streamlining support services. The cuts were announced on Monday along with a 3.8% increase in the police budget to £198.8m. The force said it would not damage the quality of policing seen by the public. Surrey Police Authority set the budget for the coming year at a public meeting in Dorking on Monday. It said the force continued to face a substantial gap in its budget as a result of years of underfundin…
