A convicted sex offender tortured and murdered a mother and her 10-year-old daughter whom he had befriended in the guise of a kind neighbour. Former soldier Thomas Smith, 26, brutally raped terrified school girl Holly Fallon before strangling her and her mother Diane, 43, with a computer games console cable using a technique he perfected in the army. Both had been subjected to extreme violence and 'sadistic torture' as well as sexually assaulted, a court heard. Smith hid Holly's body under stones in a river and dumped her mother's body in undergrowth four miles from her home in Cronberry, Ayrshire. The victims had no idea of Smith's criminal background. A 'platonic fr…

It's a shame it's only four who will face trial, but at least they will have their day in court.

The chief constable of Devon and Cornwall has rejected criticism of his £175,000 salary and allowances. Gary Streeter, the Conservative MP for South West Devon MP, cited Stephen Otter's pay during a debate in the Commons about public sector salaries. He also pointed out that five senior officers in the force earned six-figure salaries. Mr Otter said he understood concern about public sector wages but felt he earned his salary. Mr Streeter told the Commons: "I think he's a good chief constable doing a very good job. 'Apples and pears' "But he is being paid broadly the same as the prime minister. "I find it hard to understand why people in the public sector can …

Three people managed to scramble from a car before it was hit by a train on the outskirts of Salisbury, in Wiltshire. The driver of the car had apparently lost control before it went through a fence, rolled down an embankment and came to rest on the track. Network Rail said the 1730 GMT Cardiff to Portsmouth train struck the car and pushed it off the track on Wednesday. "The train was damaged but not derailed or disabled. No passengers on the train were injured," the spokeswoman added. 'Severely damaged' British Transport Police said its officers were called to Skew Bridge, Wilton Road, at 1940 GMT. "On arrival at it was found the vehicle had been struck by the t…

Conficker virus hits Manchester Police computers Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has been cut off from a national criminal database for more than three days because of a computer virus. IT experts disconnected GMP from the Police National Computer (PNC) after finding the conficker virus on Friday. It means officers have been asking neighbouring forces to carry out national checks on names and vehicles. The conficker virus, a malicious worm, is believed to have infected up to 15 million computers around the world. It was identified in the GMP system on Friday and quickly spread through the force, leading to the decision to cut off access to the PNC. Assistant C…

"I will be home one day and I can't wait to look into certain people's eyes and see the fear of me being there." Words of Colin Gunn, jailed for 35 years, published on his facebook page. What a joke, instead of facebook, how about getting them reading some books, which might educate them, and change their ways. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8496658.stm

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/news...s-courses.html London Telegraph Posted February 1, 2010 Officers are being encouraged to sign up to a course by Tom Silver, who is better known as a ‘celebrity hypnotherapist’ on American chat shows, in an attempt to gain more information from suspects. The course will teach students ‘cutting edge techniques’, including an introduction into Electroencephalography (EEG) and will be paid for out of police coffers, according to respected industry magazine Police Review. EEG is the recording of electrical activity in the brain gathered by placing sensors on the scalp which monitor ‘neuron activity’ – which cops believe…

thousands of police recruits who were promised jobs more than a year ago have been told that, due to budget cuts, the positions earmarked for them are no longer available. The Independent has learnt that about 2,000 would-be officers were recruited by the Metropolitan Police during a drive in January 2009 and told they would start their training in spring last year. Now, despite passing exams and interviews, the successful candidates have received letters informing them that they will not be offered a start date until 2011 at the earliest – almost two years later than they were led to believe.

T…
