Elected police commissioners pilot scheme could be May's only hope Home secretary will have to concede the scheme is tried out in a handful of forces following police reform bill's Lords defeat Theresa May had hoped to hold elections for police commissioners in England and Wales next year. Images Theresa May's, hopes of holding elections for police commissioners in nearly every force across England and Wales next May look close to zero in the aftermath of an unexpected Lords defeat. This is because, contrary to the immediate Westminster conventional wisdom, this is not a defeat that will be easily overturned when the flagship law and order bill comes back to the Comm…

A teenage burglar who broke into an 80-year-old woman’s home gloated on Facebook, ‘Bring it on, easy!’ just minutes after a judge ruled he and his accomplice would not face manslaughter charges over her death. Pauline Reddick suffered a stroke after Louis Corbett and Liam Cunliffe broke into her home at 3.30am. She died in hospital eight hours later. With the recent proposed changes to the police pension I've been hearing a lot of claims like "The taxpayer doesn't pay for my pension, I pay 11%" as if that creates a big enough pension pot regardless. If this is true then why complain about the pension scheme being closed down? We could just open a private pension, pay in 11% for 30 years and retire at 50 on two-thirds final salary index linked for the rest of our lives.

A detective has warned that social networking sites are increasingly hampering major police investigations. Detective Chief Inspector Jes Fry, from Norfolk Police, was speaking after Michael Tucker, 50, was jailed for 26 years at Norwich Crown Court for murdering his partner, Rebecca Thorpe, 28, and hiding her body in a freezer. The murder happened in the village of Snettisham - just two miles from the Queen's Sandringham estate - and during the original investigation there was widespread speculation on Twitter about the circumstances of the killing. Rumours included untrue speculation that Miss Thorpe had been decapitated. Mr Fry said the investigation had been a 'comp…

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-13526638 A police squad intended to investigate sex crimes was under-resourced and run by inexperienced officers, a judge has said. A "Sapphire" unit was established in Southwark, south-east London, six years ago. Mr Justice Collins, speaking at a hearing into the investigation of an alleged rape, criticised the unit. The Metropolitan Police said it was a matter for the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC). In early 2005 detectives investigated the alleged rape of a 15-year-old girl. A man was charged with raping the girl but found not guilty after a trial, the court heard. Relatives of the alleged victim were …
