Premier League football clubs should pay more towards the cost of policing games, a Staffordshire MP has said. Conservative MP for Cannock Chase Aidan Burley said as police funding is cut, top-flight clubs should make bigger contributions. Clubs pay for policing inside and immediately outside grounds but forces cannot claim back what they spend on using extra officers for big matches. West Midlands Police spent £2.2m policing the four top clubs in 2008-9. Speaking at a debate at the House of Commons, Mr Burley revealed the figures which were obtained under the Freedom of Information Act. He said last season West Midlands Police recouped £1.4m of the £2.2m it spent - b…

Among the many things a tourist might need when visiting a foreign country, some might argue a knowledge of emergency numbers could be quite useful. However for one U.S. citizen holidaying in the UK, it obviously wasn't at the top of the list. When marine biologist Liz Francis found herself trapped on a beach in Somerset, she dialled the 911 emergency number for help - because she didn't know the British equivalent. Safe and sound: Liz Francis got stranded as she photographed sea anemones at the base of a cliff Incredibly, U.S. operators put her through to police in the UK who sent rescuers to help the 68-year-old, from Washington DC. Ms Francis had been photographin…

Anybody been watching this? Quite interesting to see what goes on inside the prison. One thing that interests me is that in todays episode a prisoner who has attacked a prison guard/warden, is under his bed. Banging his head against the bed. The nurse in attendance says that they couldnt drag the prisoner from under the bed as its common assualt. For me as a MOP, this seems counter productive. Surely for his own safety / benefit / medical safety, it would be the safest course of action to remove him from harm and or from objects that can harm him?. If hes left there, and allowed to get himself injured to the point of serious medical intervention, there would be no …

Police were called at 8.30am to a branch of Tesco in Aston, Birmingham, leading to a five-hour stand-off as armed officers surrounded the building. The incident ended peacefully, however, when a man was taken from the building to a waiting police van. And despite a search for a gun, no weapon was found - although bomb disposal experts were called in to investigate a green carrier bag which the man had taken with him. Armed police arrested the man after a five-hour siege at a branch of Tesco in Aston, Birmingham Police arrested the man as the bomb squad went…

British authorities have "given up" on looking for missing girl Madeleine McCann, her parents have said. Speaking as the third anniversary of her disappearance nears, Kate and Gerry McCann told GMTV they wanted the government to review the whole case. Gerry McCann said it was wrong that he and wife Kate had to lead efforts to find their child. Madeleine went missing from a holiday flat in Praia da Luz on the Algarve, Portugal, in May 2007, aged three. Mr McCann said it was "incredibly frustrating" that police in Portugal and the UK had not been actively looking for Madeleine "for a very long time". The couple - from Rothley, Leicestershire - still believe their d…
