Mossad officials participated in a security drill at London's Olympic Park last weekend. A source at the British Cabinet told Yedioth Ahronoth that the drill simulated a terrorist attack on athletes, similar to the one that occurred in the Munich Olympics in 1972, when Palestinian terrorists took over the building where the Israeli delegation was staying, and killed 11 of them. The UK's entire defence establishment, including the emergency services, participated in the massive drill, which was held secretly by the British defence Ministry. But British intelligence officials were not satisfied, and invited their Mossad counterparts to share their experience. …

A serial burglar was spared being locked up because a court heard his cleanliness disorder and other emotional problems would make it too traumatic.Nathan Cassidy, 20, of Flack End, Orchard Park, in Cambridge, who had 14 previous convictions for 29 offences, was not given an immediate custodial sentence because of his obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Yet the court had heard how one of his elderly victims collapsed in shock after the criminal struck.Victim Aslaug Choudhray said in a statement, read to the court, that her husband, Mohibur, collapsed later that day, which she believed was a delayed reaction to the shock of the burglary. Charles Snelling, prosecuting, sai…

Smash-and-grab raiders were foiled in their latest bid to break into a designer store - nine days after successfully stealing thousands of pounds of handbags from the shop. Six thieves on three mopeds tried to shatter the front door of Loewe in Mount Street, Mayfair, at 11.50 last night but fled empty-handed after being confronted by a security guard. On May 3 four raiders on two mopeds smashed the front door and snatched a large number of handbags. Pictures of the inside of the store taken by a passing photographer showed shelves stripped bare. The foiled attempt was the latest in a spate of raids on designer stores in central London. On Tuesday four men on…

An illegal immigrant turned criminal is set for thousands in a taxpayer funded payout after judges ruled he was falsely imprisoned while awaiting deportation. Joseph Mjemer, 28, arrived in the UK as a stowaway, committed more than 20 offences, used at least five aliases and claimed to be from four different countries. But he is now set to be turned loose with a taxpayer-funded compensation payout - despite the judge admitting there is a risk that he could commit more crimes, or simply disappear. Mr Mjemer's lawyers argued at the hearing in London that he had been unlawfully held in prison while immigration officials tried to establish where he came from so they could…

Police are paying marketing companies about £1 million a year to carry out ‘customer satisfaction’ surveys. Figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act show that forces are handing over the names of at least 30,000 members of the public every month to assess the response to inquiries such as 999 calls. More than £700,000 was paid last year to two firms, Bostock Marketing Group (BMG) and Swift Research of Leeds. Financial services worker Jonathan Hall obtained figures from 15 police forces in England after he was contacted. Mr Hall, 24, had dialled 999 after witnessing a fight in Guildford. He was angry to discover that police had posted his details to Bos…

A convicted burglar who forced his way into an artists’ workshop was fined just 1p after a deal struck by prosecutors. Michael Leslie, 29, was arrested after his DNA matched blood at the scene, where a laptop and chequebooks were found to be missing. With two previous burglary convictions, he would have faced a mandatory three-year jail term if found guilty of the offence a third time. But when prosecutors realised he was going to deny burglary but admit breaking in and falling asleep, they decided to charge him with an obscure and ancient vagrancy offence instead. It is thought they wanted to secure a conviction but avoid a costly trial. As a result Leslie walked free…

Far-right group the English Defence League was involved in fights with a group of Muslims outside West London Magistrates Court in Hammersmith on Wednesday afternoon, prompting police to make eight arrests. Two women were taken to hospital after the clashes, which involved up to 150 members of the EDL and a group of teenagers. The EDL had descended on the area to show support for founder Stephen Lennon - also known by the pseudonym Tommy Robinson - who was in court charged with a public order offence during Armistice Day in Kensington last year, when Muslim extremists burned poppies. A video seen by the Chronicle shows the EDL crowd chanting songs about the…
