I am getting quite a few complaints about the new 30 mile round trip limit on Home>Duty travelling expenses. The main comment is that SCs were recruited under the promise that they would never be out of pocket doing their duties, but now they are effectively having to pay to come in on duty if they live more than 15 miles away from their home station. Given that, in a rural area, it is sometimes further than 15 miles to your nearest station, I think they may have a point !! It also seems unfair if you put to be stationed in (say) Mildenhall (5 miles away), but end up being posted to Newmarket (21 miles away) because Mildenhall is full. Its not your fault you are now …

I have been told that the new batch of Specials have been issued with certain digit numbers - I can't believe they have run out of other certain digit numbers, we haven't got THAT many officers!! Don't they re-issue defunct numbers any more??

Why oh why ?? Are Specials are not allowed to apply for for posts advertised internally within the Constabulary. There are a couple of DO's jobs going at the moment that I cannot apply for, because I am a Special - do I not work for the Constabulary then?. It seem daft that someone, with no experience of custody, who shuffles paper around in HR at FHQ can apply for the job, but someone who is used to dealing with the type of 'customers' we get, can't . If I do get made redundant from my current job, why should I be excluded from applying for a civilian post just because I am a Special Can anyone explain how this fits in with the 'we are all one family' ethos, when one…

Hi there, Wanted to introduce myself, I'm hoping to apply to become a special here in Suffolk. Bit gutted that I'm away for the local information evening in Newmarket, and I have to wait until October for the next one nearby! Thought about applying some years back when I still lived in Cambridgeshire, but finally thought it was time to commit to this before I get too old! Really like the forums, very useful!

Right... I’m surprised on one else has started this, so I will. To be honest, I’m shocked. I would also just like to clarify that the majority of PCSO I have worked with are fantastic, and go way above their role. The help they have given me is more than what they should be doing. But, that doesn’t change my opinion, that the role is unnecessary, over priced and an ineffective way of policing. I think there is a role for the PCSO in today’s policing climate. For example I think there should be a PCSO on duty at an SNT between 7am and midnight every day. Anyway, I think this pretty much cements it for me that the Constabulary won’t be recruiting PCs for a …

Good Luck to all attending the Assessment Centre at Martlesham this Saturday Don't worry about it, relax and enjoy it - we are not there to deliberately fail anyone, there is no quota, if you are all good (as I am sure you will be ) you all pass, if you don't pass, its not the end of the world. Listen to the advice and try again. I will see you all there (I will be the interviewer in the ill fitting suit {lost weight , not gained it before you comment JH} mainlining coffee.........two sugars please )

Hi all, can anyone tell if it's ok for a special to use the gym at Headquarters? Now got my warrant card so can finally access the building! Thanks Tom.

We are currently recruiting Specials in most areas of Suffolk. However, for the time being, we are unable to take applications for those who wish to serve in Woodbridge and Capel St Mary. There are also limited vacancies in Ipswich. This is only a temporary measure and the situation could change in the future. © Suffolk Constabulary. All Rights Reserved. Privacy Statement. ////

Hi, I am hoping to become a Special, and I recently attended an information Evening. We were told that the current initial training periods are 6 weekends out of 12, but that this is going to rise to 10 out of 20. I might be able to do 6, but 10 is tricky due to my job. I have a couple of questions: 1) does anyone know when it is supposed to go up to 10? 2) how many hours does a weekend take up? I know they start on Friday evening and finish Sunday afternoon, but what are the hours per day? Great site by the way - lots of friendly posters and useful informaton! Cheers,
