I am thinking of applying to SYP, I am post Humberside for 8 years but now live very close to the South Yorkshire Border. Just a few questions first, most probably I would be posted to Doncaster or Thorne as they are closest stations, what kind of stations are they, are they pro specials, once competant do you go out independent or are you allways doubled up with a reg, do you mainly do foot patrol or can you get a driving ticket, just trying to get everyones advice and experiences to help make my decission.

Hello, I was lucky enough a year ago soon after becoming interested in the work of the police to join the Hampshire force nr. Winchester for 3 day shifts and two evening shifts. This was great experience and despite wearing an observer jacket, I was able to blend in well and offer that extra presence that the officer I was with was glad to have. I then went to America in March this year and joined the San Francisco police for a full night shift including a qualifying session on the gun range to gain insight into their work, and how it differs from English policing. Now getting to the point - I have some large career choices to make soon (looking at either forgetting t…

Hi just a quick question, why do different forces do the vetting quicker than others. syp take up to 3 months which feels like years, but other forces do the vetting in 2 weeks, just don't under stand why?. If you all have to go through the same process why do some forces do it quicker than others. Thanks stacy.

Please use care when discussing matters on this site. The advent of electronic chat, forums and similar net based communications is that you may forget that you are not chatting to your shift mates in a van, but on media that is accessible to everyone. Please do not revel current & planned operational information, or past operational identifiable information beyond that already in the public domain (this has happened recently on this site). Think before hitting reply! This isn't directed at anyone in particular, just passing on a message from SCT!

Well today my joining instructions have arrived. I found out last week that I'd finally passed vetting almost a year since applying. Being the eternal pessimist I hadnt let myself believe it until today. I start training in a couple of weeks. I actually cant express how happy this has made me, especially after such a long wait.

hello, Just a few queries..... been a special about 8 months now and just on MOD 3 now ( on district about 4 months)... does anyone know a timescale for expenses to be paid from sending them off ??? Blackberry courses i hear are getting rolled out for all specials that haven't got them by end of year... and driving courses are generally not done until youve been on district for more than 6 months??? Can someone just clarify all this for me please.... much appreciated SHEFFIELD NORTH RULES!!!!

Hi, I received a phone call yesterday from South Yorkshire Police saying that I've past my Vetting and References for the Special Constabulary and have been invited along to start training on the 28th November. Does anyone know what will be involved in the training? Also, will there be any written tests that I need to pass or are there any other types of assessments within the training process? Thanks, Chelsea
