Police paid hundreds in bonuses simply for handling dead bodies: Outcry as officers 'get extra just for doing their job' . Police get £500 bonus to attend a car crash, murder, or fingerprint a corpse . It amounts to £100,000 a year despite all other bonuses being scrapped . Even train drivers who witness suicides do not get similar payments . Keith Vaz said: 'I would have thought these matters were part of the job' Police forces have been criticised for paying officers hundreds of pounds in macabre bonuses for dealing with dead bodies. Families of victims of accidents and crime are likely to be horrified that officers are profiting from their personal tragedies. Police …

http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-2452484 The government has announced plans to allow direct entry into the highest ranks of policing, ending 180 years of tradition. The proposals would allow external candidates to reach senior positions without ever being a constable. Ministers say forces in England and Wales will also be allowed to recruit chief constables from overseas. Many officers oppose the changes on a point of principle, saying commanders must have operational experience. There are approximately 800 superintendents in England and Wales who have operational responsibilities for local divisions and major investigations. Under the changes, the College of Policing woul…

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-24519383 ---------------- An interesting proposition. I was on an NPT shift that night, and a lot of the regs coming back from Bradford were annoyed that their day had been wasted. One PSU Sgt at our station said he was the 63rd PSU Serial to turn up, for a march of only 700 people, it does seem like a colossal waste of money, considering WYP is needing to save £66m.

The first image of what the relocated Scotland Yard could look like has been released. The Metropolitan Police said architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris would be redeveloping its next HQ, at the Curtis Green Building on Victoria Embankment. The Met is leaving nearby New Scotland Yard for the smaller premises in 2015. A key design feature of the force's next base is a public open space, and the iconic revolving Scotland Yard sign will be transferred. A number of architects responded to a design competition launched in May, with Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (AHMM) emerging as the winning firm. Other features of its successful submission include a new pub…

Well well well. Headline in the Birmingham Post today....."24m surplus for police as officers flock to the exit." Frustratingly, there is no link available on the internet. So to give you a flavour, I will lift pieces from the article. Morale collapse blamed for resignations contributing to huge budget underspend. Police Chiefs trying to axe 1100 frontline officers have been stunned by a stampede for the exit by officers - and have been forced to launch a recruitment drive. WMP must save £126 million by 2015 and has set out plans to lose an average 220 officers each year as a part of the costcutting strategy. But so many officers have chosen to leave of th…

Four men have been arrested in London in a counter-terrorism operation, the Metropolitan Police have said. Scotland Yard said they were held under the Terrorism Act 2000 on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. Armed officers were involved in the arrests, which took place at around 19:10 BST in the Whitechapel, Bayswater and Peckham areas. Police said searches were taking place at six addresses. In a statement the Met said the arrests were made during a "pre-planned, intelligence-led operation". The men have been taken to a south London police station. Two men were were arrested in Mansell Street, Whitechapel…

A recruitment drive could be launched by West Midlands Police – despite the force having to get rid of 1,100 officers. The force has lost more officers than it hoped to in the past six months, also resulting in a £24m under-spend in its budget. Chiefs blamed high stress levels and low morale for the high numbers leaving. A consultation on new recruitment will be launched in November, with police and crime commissioner Bob Jones saying losing extra staff but saving money at the same time was ‘mixed news’. The force needs to axe the 1,100 officers by 2015 as part of £126m savings. That equates to 220 a year but an extra 29 officers have been lost since April alon…
