Carole Duggan doesn't want us to meet at her house, because she's sure it has been bugged. She thinks her mobile has also been tapped, so we don't decide on an alternative venue over the phone. We can't make arrangements by email, either, because her laptop was stolen in a recent break-in. It might have been just a random burglary, of course but the thief was uncommonly tidy, didn't touch her cash and other valuables, and stole only the computer and a phone. Besides, even if no one is listening in, she's still wary about talking to me. The press keep twisting her words, she says, and she worries that whatever she says will be used against her by the Daily Mail and the Su…

"The New York City Police Department is testing Google Glass to see if wearable computers could be useful in law enforcement. Glass has a built-in camera that can record video and could potentially be useful in gathering evidence. It is also capable of running apps such as NameTag, which entered beta testing this week, that can photograph a person and identify them by scouring social networks for a match. If the device was widely adopted by police it could be set up with an app that allowed officers to search databases of known offenders and outstanding warrants in a similar way." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/google/10623753/New-York-police-testing-Google-Glass…

An interesting proposition. I know its something that is being discussed up in Yorkshire. More and more we are working as Yorkshire and the Humber, and they are thinking why pay for 4 CCs when 1 could do. I think a lot of forces are looking to see how the recent formation of PSoS is working and how that can be adapted.

Two police officers have been accused of leaving a vile, expletive-riddled voicemail message on the phone of a suspected domestic abuse victim. An investigation has been launched by the professional standards team at West Midlands Police over the claims. The complaint was made by 19-year-old Alex Faragher, from Sutton Coldfield, who was due to give a statement to police over reports of domestic violence in January. Two officers from Sutton Coldfield police station have now been put on restricted duties, and will not be working in public-facing roles while the investigation is ongoing. Ch Supt Rachel Jones has spoken of her "shock and devastation" after hearing about t…

The constables were suspended from duty following an investigation by the force's professional standards unit. The men, who were held on 6 February, have been released on police bail. Two are from Caerphilly county and the third is from the Newport area. The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) will supervise the investigation. In a statement, the force said: "As a result of a Gwent Police professional standards-led investigation, three male police constables, two of whom live in the Caerphilly borough area and one from the Newport area, have been…

Water cannon were used in Chile last year to disperse student protesters The Metropolitan Police force has not made a "convincing case" for buying three water cannon, a report says. London Assembly's police and crime committee says that, with no specific intelligence of disorder, it is unclear why there is a "rush" to get them. London Mayor Boris Johnson is consulting on plans to pay up to £300,000 for three second-hand water cannon from Germany. The Met says water cannon would be "rarely seen and rarely used". And it claims to have public support for the idea. 'Full debate' They have been used in Northern Ireland but they are not currently authorised in Britain. …
