Jailed: Chris Maitland Metropolitan Police A detective who molested a young girl while working on the Met Police’s child abuse unit has been jailed for more than five years. Detective Constable Chris Maitland, 40, was working on the Met's Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command when the sex offences were carried out. He was today jailed after admitting two counts of sexually touching a girl under 13 and 12 offences of making an indecent image of a child. Maitland, who admitted his crimes in April after being arrested in November, was sentenced to five years and four months in prison. He is currently suspended from duty, Scotland Yard said. A police s…

Detective Sergeant Ian Mangham was jailed for a campaign of harassment A "cruel and vindictive" Met Police detective who made fake leaflets advertising his ex-partner as a prostitute has been jailed. Detective Sergeant Ian Mangham, 50, put his ex-girlfriend's phone number and address on cards advertising sexual services, which he stuck in phone boxes and pub toilets. This led to her receiving calls from men seeking sex and even knocks at her door in the middle of the night, Hammersmith magistrates’ court has heard. It was part of a campaign of harassment which also included turning up at her home late at night and bombarding her with junk mail and unwanted brochures…

Fired: The made false claims in incident reports Two officers who betrayed the “fundamental values” of policing have been sacked after lying about their search for a pedestrian who was later killed in a crash. Essex police constables Joanne Jeggo and John Simpson were dispatched to investigate reports of a man, Kyle Brooks, walking alone on a major road near Chelmsford. They carried out an unsuccessful search and later filed incident reports in which they falsely claimed they had tried to find out more about his location. Mr Brooks was later struck by a vehicle and killed on the A12 on October 30, 2014. The Essex Police officers were both dismissed for gross miscond…

Istiak Yusuf, 25, died in June 2015 after being arrested for an alleged assault against his wife. Ampthill Coroners Court was shown footage of him being checked in and searched before being taken to a cell. The jury earlier heard Mr Yusuf, who lived in Luton, managed to take cocaine and MDMA after being searched. The footage shows Mr Yusuf being asked questions such as "have you got anything on you?" This is a really sad case and I have the upmost sympathy for the parents. However, I am really disappointed at the way in which ‘police-present drownings’ are reported in the media. Jack was taken to hospital and received care from a Consultant, who discharged him following an episode of drug induced psychosis, without giving any after care advice. That is a clear failure in relation to clinical responsibilities of duty of care. I also assume that this lad was not medicated? Someone in that state needs to be put on diazepam for a few days, plus some sleeping pills. He probably had not slept in days, which would have caused a form of psychosis in its own right. …

The force has to make a further £45m of savings by 2018 Kent Police is getting slower on average to respond to 999 calls, figures obtained by the BBC reveal. In 2015/16, officers in the county took nearly 14 minutes on average to respond to daytime emergency calls - four minutes longer than in 2010. The Police Federation said it was not surprised by the findings after £50m of cuts over the last five years. In a statement, Kent Police said its focus was on the appropriate patrol to an incident rather than the quickest. And it said, like many other police forces, it no longer set targets for attendance times. 999 response times (obtained by BBC Radio Kent under the F…

IPCC: the police watchdog has taken over the probe The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is to take over a probe into allegations of a £1 million fraud at the Police Federation of England and Wales. Two Met Police officers were among four arrested and bailed last month by Surrey Police after the Federation raised concerns. The criminal investigation has now been taken over by the IPCC which stressed it will carry out a "thorough and independent" investigation into the "serious allegations". The allegation of "potential fraudulent activity" relates to accounts held by the Police Federation, which represents rank and file officers. It relates to the tra…

The next PCC election is on 5/05 but so far the level of apathy being displayed by both public and candidates doesn't bode well for any increase in turnout over the first elections 3 years ago. HMG must be hoping that more people will vote this time around as they are being held on the same day as the local council vote and EU referendum but if my area is anything to go by I would be really surprised if the turnout increases much at all. I have noticed a few changes this time around. There are more candidates in my area than last time (5 as opposed to 3) and one of them has made the effort to visit my village to canvas for our votes, which none managed last time aro…

http://gu.com/p/4j2b9?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other This is a horrific case involving young men at university who were suspended from their studies and also publicly shamed based upon the flimsy evidence of an unreliable witness- and then lumbered with a £0.2m legal bill. Nobody has the right to cherry pick evidence disclose. Sexual offences cases often lack credibility as it is, but these innocent young men suffered either as a result of over involvement or incompetence. I hope that they get six figure settlements for the harm that this flawed prosecution has caused. I won't pass comment on the accuser, as one cannot make pass such commentary. Nonetheless, the police …
