Volunteers could be used to guard some of the UK's borders, the Home Office has said. The plans under consideration are for "Border Force Special Volunteers" to be used at small air and sea ports. A Home Office spokesman said it was "considering the potential benefits" and looking at how they are used by police forces. Seems another slow news period so pick out a police bashing story. Certainly an award there for the worst headline ever written. If you would like your blood pressure to increase massively have a read, particularly the comments from the Tory MP Alec Brigden. I like the bit about the public lobbying police and crime commissioners to get the policing they deserve.

A police officer and a 61-year-old woman have died after a head-on crash in Sheffield on Christmas Day. South Yorkshire Police said a BMW patrol car collided with a Citroen C3 travelling in the opposite direction on the A57 at around 8.15pm on Monday evening. The 46-year-old officer was responding to an incident when the marked vehicle he was driving was in collision with a car on the A57 in Sheffield. South Yorkshire Police said the officer died at the scene and the woman, who was a passenger in the second vehicle, died in hospital. The collision happened at about 20:15 GMT near to Coisley Hill.
