A career criminal who used a web of more than 40 aliases to stay on the run after absconding from prison in the early 1990s has been jailed for three years and eight months for attempting to smuggle eight illegal migrants into the UK on a yacht. A lorry driver has been jailed for 12 years after trying to import cocaine worth almost £1.4 million into the UK. Bulgarian national Yuriy Vasilev, 48, from Pernik, Bulgaria, who hid 17 kilos of cocaine within the frame of the bunk bed in his lorry, was found guilty following a week-long trial at Canterbury Crown Court. The National Crime Agency (NCA) launched an investigation after Vasilev was stopped by Border Force officers at the Channel Tunnel terminal near Calais, shortly before boarding a train to Folkestone in July last year. A lorry driver stopped at the Port of Hull with cocaine worth £1.7 million has been jailed for 8 years and 8 months today. Mihai Ciceu, aged 34, a Romanian national with no fixed address, was sentenced at Hull Crown Court, having pleaded guilty to importing Class A drugs at an earlier hearing. The National Crime Agency investigation started on 22 January when Ciceu, a lorry driver of ten years, tried to enter the UK at the Port of Hull on board a ferry from Zeebrugge, Belgium. A convicted drug smuggler who went on the run after absconding from prison has been arrested in Spain. Daniel Dobbs, 31, from Malton in North Yorkshire was sentenced to 13-and-a-half years in prison in January 2014, after he was convicted of trafficking heroin and amphetamines following an investigation by National Crime Agency officers. On 2 November 2018 Dobbs, who was given a serious crime prevention order as a result of his conviction, was found to be missing from his cell at HMP Hatfield Lakes, a category D open prison in South Yorkshire.
