An ex-professional Pakistani cricketer and two others have today been jailed for a total of 7.25 years for bribing cricketers to fix elements of international matches. Ex-player Nasir Jamshaid, aged 33, from Oldbury, and British nationals Yousaf Anwar, aged 36, from Hayes, and Mohammad Ijaz, aged 34, from Sheffield, all admitted their roles in the conspiracy following a covert investigation by the National Crime Agency. Today at Manchester Crown Court, Jamshaid, Anwar and Ijaz were sentenced to 17 months, 3 years and 4 months, and 2 years and 6 months respectively. A seafood salesman has been convicted of smuggling an estimated 5.3 million critically endangered baby eels from Spain to East Asia via the UK over a two year period, in what is thought to be the first prosecution of its kind in the UK. Gilbert Khoo, 67, from Parbury Rise, Chessington, was today found guilty at Southwark Crown Court of six offences relating to the illegal importation and movement of the rare elvers. Specialist Border Force officers found the European ‘glass eels’, known as Anguilla Anguilla, concealed under a load of chilled fish at Heathrow Airport. Three men have been jailed after £1m worth of cocaine and £95k in cash was seized, as part of an investigation by the National Crime Agency and Metropolitan Police Service’s Organised Crime Partnership. Jimmy Tang, aged 50, of London Road, Leigh-on-Sea, who is also known as Wai Choi Tang, Raymond Cooper, aged 27, of Rochford Road, Southend, and Oltjon Gjura, aged 32, of Windmill Hill, London, admitted conspiracy to supply Class A drugs in September 2019. The Court of Appeal has dismissed an appeal by Zamira Hajiyeva – the wife of jailed Azerbaijani banker Jahangir Hajiyev – to discharge the Unexplained Wealth Order made against her by the National Crime Agency. Today (Wednesday 5th February), the court upheld the earlier decision of the Hon Mr Justice Supperstone in the High Court refusing to discharge the Unexplained Wealth Order secured in 2018. The National Economic Crime Centre in collaboration with City of London Police are spearheading a campaign targeting fraudsters responsible for duping members of the public and businesses out of billions of pounds. Fraud is the most common crime against UK households, with latest crime survey figures showing the estimated number of offences in 2019 compared with the previous year increasing by 9% to 3.8 million. The campaign, named Project OTELLO, also involves police forces, the Serious Fraud Office, the Financial Conduct Authority, Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs and the Crown Prosecution Service. The National Crime Agency-led UK organised immigration crime taskforce Project Invigor has played a key role in bringing down an organised crime group responsible for smuggling migrants through Greece. Early on the morning of Sunday 2 February the Greek authorities, working in partnership with officers from Invigor, intercepted an Italy-bound boat carrying 19 migrants in the Aegean Sea off the island of Hydra.
