A huge chunk of the workforce of an inefficient, unresponsive nationalised industry parades through the streets demanding that we give them more money that will have to come out of our pay. Outrageous. Yet everyone is nice about it. Why? In my long-ago days as an industrial reporter, the media would have pelted any such event with mockery and scorn. If they want more money, we would have said, then let them actually serve the public instead of whizzing past us in fast cars or disappearing into offices where nobody can find them. Why do they always go round in pairs talking to each other and ignoring us? And how come we only ever see them when they want more pay or when…

A chief constable has told his staff to monitor online encyclopedia Wikipedia - to stop its users posting rude comments about him. Sir Norman Bettison took exception to being described as a "greedy, vain moron" on the online encyclopaedia, according to Police Review magazine. The 52-year-old chief constable of West Yorkshire - favourite to succeed Sir Ian Blair as head of the Met - has ordered employees to check for changes often. Wikipedia entries can be edited by anyone with an internet connection. This has led to West Yorkshire staff and other Wikipedia users becoming involved in an "edit war" - where two sides repeatedly change a page. One Wikipedia user had ins…

Long thread - but trust me....it is well worth the read.....These are extracts from a report called "The Public and the Police". Printed in a series in this weeks Daily Mail. I must say, its been spot on upton now. Here are the first 2 parts. One afternoon, a neighbour of mine, an attractive young mother, had just got home and was helping her 18-month-old son out of the back of the car when she was set upon by three men. They yanked her backwards, held her down on the ground and punched her repeatedly in the throat - all in front of her little boy. Then they snatched her watch and her rings and made off. Initially the police reaction was good because of the level of …

Every part of Britain will be mapped for its potential to produce violent Muslim extremists under a new strategy drawn up by senior police officers, it has emerged. At its counter-terrorism conference in Brighton this week, the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) approved a blueprint for how to prevent al Qaida recruiting fresh supporters. The 40-page document aims to stop extremist ideas gaining hold in schools, colleges, prisons and over the internet. It includes advice for parents on how to stop their children searching for jihadist websites. "The internet is a potential area where a tendency towards violent extremism can be exploited," it reads. "Parents …

The Police Federation today increased pressure on the government by applying for a judicial review of its decision not to backdate officers' pay awards. The decision to challenging the government's decision to go against the recommendation of an independent arbitration panel came as more than 22,000 police officers marched through Whitehall in central London, the federation's first organised march in its history. The federation's chairwoman, Jan Berry, accused the home secretary, Jacqui Smith, of showing "a total lack of respect" for the police by introducing their pay rise from last month rather than backdating it to September, effectively reducing the award from 2.5%…

The prison population in England and Wales has exceeded its highest normal level for the first time. The Ministry of Justice said that as of Friday morning there were 82,068 inmates in jails - 96 over the Prison Service's "operational capacity". Justice Secretary Jack Straw has asked magistrates to jail fewer people while officials attempt to manage the crisis. Some 358 inmates are in police or court cells to ease pressure on a system with current capacity of 81,972. Ministry of Justice figures reveal that the population breached that capacity on Thursday evening. The breach comes despite a year of efforts to reduce pressures by releasing more prisoners and buil…

I personally think this could be a good idea if it helps speed up certain areas of the Muslim legal process as current laws are so outdated and For example, Muslims could choose to have marital disputes or financial matters dealt with in a Sharia court. Just be interested in any of your thoughts? Thanks

Police chiefs 'rewarded for failure' by bonuses By Ben Leapman, Home Affairs Correspondent Last Updated: 11:21pm GMT 16/02/2008 Police chiefs are being paid thousands of pounds in merit bonuses despite running poorly performing forces. Bonus pay-outs vary widely across the country and often do not reflect the success of forces in official Home Office performance ratings. Critics said police chiefs were being "rewarded for failure" and called for the rules to be tightened. Half the forces in England and Wales are boycotting the bonus scheme entirely, and one chief constable said she and most of her counterparts were "morally" opposed to it. advertisement But three …

The Gay Police Association said calls to its helpline were increasing The number of complaints about homophobia within the police has risen by almost a quarter, according to the Gay Police Association. The association said it received 350 calls to its helpline last year, compared with 260 the year before. It estimated that there were about 7,000 homophobic incidents among police last year, but intimidated officers were reluctant to report them. The police said "any form of homophobia has no place in the police". The Gay Police Association said it was aware of colleagues refusing to serve with gay officers and quoting sections of the Bible at them on parade groun…

"Feb 11 2008 by Tina Miles, Liverpool Echo A RETIRED Royal Marine has been fined by police for showing loyalty to his regiment. Grandfather-of-two David Horlick had a Marine replica badge printed on his car number plate to recognise his service with the Royal Naval School of Music. But the 74-year-old was reduced to tears when two officers gave him a fixed penalty ticket outside his Walton home. They told the widower he had to remove the illegal plate bearing the insignia of the Marines and pay the £30 fine, or go to court. Mr Horlick said: “I didn’t think I was doing anything wrong. I wanted the replica badge on the number plate because my late wife Connie was ve…
