'The Home Office, together with ACPO and the Association of Police Authorities, are considering police pay structural reform. This is at an early stage.' 'We recognise the role overtime has to play in responding to local policing needs and while it is for individual forces to manage resources the latest figures show that overtime was about seven per cent of the total cost of police pay.' 'We will be carrying out research to address how forces can manage overtime expenditure more efficiently.' The above is the text of a Home Office press release which was issued in the last couple of days... I have heard murmurings that they're looking to do away with overtime payment…

The right-hand man of "Mr Loophole" solicitor Nick Freeman advised a family to lie after their son was caught speeding in south Wales, a court heard. Law practice manager Trevor Howarth, 46, is facing charges in relation to perverting the course of justice. Bristol Crown Court heard claims he told the parents of a teenager caught speeding near Abergavenny in 2006 to ignore speeding tickets sent to them. The trial continues of Mr Howarth, from Whittle-Le-Woods, Lancashire. Crown prosecutor Robin Spencer QC told the jury the firm where Mr Howarth worked and its principal partner Nick Freeman had a reputation for successfully exploiting legal technicalities in motori…

Fury At MPs' £22k 'John Lewis' Freebies MPs are facing criticism over taxpayer-funded expenses after it emerged they can claim up to £10,000 for a new kitchen to spruce up their second homes. They can also buy TVs and stereos worth £750 apiece, £300 air-conditioning units and £6,335 bathrooms out of their Parliamentary allowances. The amounts MPs can claim under their controversial expenses regime were disclosed after a Freedom of Information Act request. They are contained in the "John Lewis list" - so called because it is based on prices at the department store. Commons officials use the list to approve or reject MPs' expenses claims. It details the precede…

Police force to shed 300 officers Up to 300 police officer posts are to be axed and replaced with support staff roles, Humberside Police has announced. The force said the changes would free up the remaining Pcs from "back office" and administrative duties and would improve frontline policing. It said the officers' posts would go over the next five years through a process of natural wastage. Deputy chief constable David Griffin said it would release some 20,000 hours of officer time back on the streets. Humberside Police said it would recruit between 350 and 400 support staff. The loss of the 300 posts accounts for 13.5% of the force's full time police officers…

COPS spent TWO DAYS hunting a practical joker who took two traffic cones – just to hit force targets. Bank worker Masum Ahmed swiped the £10 road markers as a prank then found himself facing a massive man-hunt. Three officers were deployed to find him before locking him up for FOUR HOURS. They then slapped him with an £80 fine – only to withdraw it hours later. The incident came after Insp Chris Burrows, chairman of the Greater Manchester Police Federation, said cops are being forced to give the theft of a milk bottle the same importance as a murder to hit clear-up targets. Mr Ahmed, 27, was “gob-smacked†with the reaction after he nicked the cones in B…
