Following a report in today's Evening Standard we wish to make it clear that MPS Commissioner Sir Ian Blair has neither recommended nor approved a plan to hand over any part of London's Olympic security to other countries. Approval for foreign police officers to carry firearms in the UK is a ministerial one through the Home Office and at this time no decision has been reached on these matters. As part of the proper planning process to assess the armed capability requirement in 2012 the Commissioner raised the issue last June with the Metropolitan Police Authority and made it clear that the over-riding principle was that the Met 'did not want armed foreign police'. EU rule means millions of UK number plates illegal, DoT ######-up... oooops I am speechless ... Yellow plates, red faces UK rear vehicle registration plates illegal under European Standards Embarassed Department of Transport officials have admitted that most of the yellow rear number plates in circulation on UK roads do not meet European retro-reflectivity standards introduced Europe-wide in 1999. The Department mandated significant changes to the style of vehicle registration plates in September 2001 but says it "appears to have overlooked" this requirement. The European standard requires that in member states all vehicle number plates should be white on both th…

BRITAIN faces chaos as public sector workers stage the biggest mass strike in decades. More than 100,000 civil servants in ten government departments will walk out in a pay dispute on April 24 – the same day teachers hold their first strike in 20 years. Union barons yesterday named the day as their first major challenge to Gordon Brown’s public sector wage freeze. Advertisement They accuse the PM of inflicting a pay CUT by pegging public sector rises below inflation. PCS union leader Mark Serwotka said: “Striking is a last resort and could have been avoided if the Government hadn’t continued with its refusal to negotiate meaningfully.†Yesterday 700 co…

A council has used powers intended for anti-terrorism surveillance to spy on a family who were wrongly accused of lying on a school application form. Have you say: Are these tactics justified? For two weeks the middle-class family was followed by council officials who wanted to establish whether they had given a false address within the catchment area of an oversubscribed school to secure a place for their three-year-old. The council logged the family's actions in detail- click to enlarge The "spies" made copious notes on the movements of the mother and her three children, who they referred to as "targets" as they were trailed on school runs. The snoopers even watched…

Police seized nearly 37,000 pints of beer and cider from children during a two-week crackdown earlier this year, it has been revealed. Officers also confiscated 1,165 litres of wine, 1,027 litres of spirits and 1,255 litres of alcopops from underage drinkers in the campaign, which took place during a half-term break. The figures will be seized upon by some commentators who claim underage drinking has been allowed to spiral out of control. But Government ministers hailed the results of the £760,000 campaign - staged by 39 police forces in England and Wales - as a success. Of the 5,143 youngsters who surrendered alcohol to the police, 25% said they were aged 15 or under…
