Julia Hodson, a 51-year-old winner of the Queen's Police Medal, is to be Nottinghamshire's new chief constable. She will become the first woman to head the force when she takes over from Steve Green, who retires in June. Ms Hodson, deputy chief constable of West Yorkshire, was also Assistant Chief Constable in Lancashire. Mr Green dealt with high-profile gun crime, gangland killings and the murder of 14-year-old Danielle Beccan during his tenure. Nottinghamshire Police Authority said her wide experience will make Ms Hodson "a worthy successor". As any mother knows, it is difficult to feed a small child on the run without creating a mess. So when Sarah Davies accidentally dropped a piece of sausage roll while giving it to her hungry four-year- old daughter Chloe, she might have hoped for sympathy. But the incident was spotted by two officials from her local "environment crime unit" on the lookout for litter offenders. Sarah Davies was furious for being fined £75 for 'littering' after a small piece of a sausage roll being eaten by daughter Chloe fell on the pavement They threatened her with arrest for refusing to give her name and fined her £75 - even though pigeons had already pecked up the morsel within…

Commenting on statistics released today on motoring offences and breath tests dealt with by the police in England and Wales in 2006 and earlier years, Steve Green, ACPO lead on Roads Policing and Chief Constable of Nottinghamshire Police said: “Ensuring safe and responsible use of the roads is a priority for the police service and these statistics reveal our determination to enforce legislation as part of that campaign. It is pleasing to see that we have maintained our push against drink driving. We were down just 1% on last year’s excellent figures, demonstrating that we are still very focused on combating on this destructive crime. There have been 13% more breath t…

A police sergeant put a female officer over his knee, spanked her and told her she was a "naughty girl" on a night out, a court heard yesterday. Mark Downing, 39, also slapped her on the bottom at a barbecue and joked: "If it's there - it's only fair that I hit it," it was claimed. Downing, who works for Thames Valley Police, denies three counts of sexual assault on two women officers. Christopher Smyth, prosecuting, said colleagues had stopped inviting him to social events because of his inappropriate sexual behaviour. The first two incidents happened during a drunken barbecue at one of the women's houses in Slough on July 6 last year, Swindon Crown Court heard. …
