Warwickshire Police officer whose actions saved a man's life and prevented a motorway catastrophe has received a commendation from the Chief Constable. In the afternoon of Saturday January 26 PC Mark Jackson, who is based at Coleshill, was called to an incident where a man was standing on the wrong side of a safety barrier on a bridge over the M42 motorway near Kingsbury. Pc Jackson used his police vehicle to bring the traffic on the motorway to a standstill and then climbed up on to the bridge to speak to the man, who said that he was going to jump. He grabbed the man in a bear hug and pulled him over the barrier to safety. PC Jackson was commended "for the calm and …

From the Beeb... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7409679.stm (Article follows) Police vote for right to strike The police are currently banned from going on strike Police officers in England and Wales have voted by a big majority to lobby the government for the right to strike. Of those who voted, 93% wanted independent Police Arbitration Tribunal decisions to be made binding. And in the absence of binding arbitration, 86% said the Police Federation should lobby for officers to be allowed "full industrial rights". The vote followed a dispute over a 2.5% pay rise to be awarded in stages, which reduced the overall increase to 1.9%. 'Trust betrayed' The resul…

I checked, it is not April 1st. Imagine a country where strangers have the right to ask intrusive questions and store the answers on a database. Where everyone from police officers to leisure-centre staff can demand: "Tell me who you feel close to?" They will also have been trained to ask questions about sexual behaviour, family life, religion, secret fears, weight and "sleeping arrangements" at home. Incredibly, thousands of Government and council apparatchiks in Britain became entitled on April 1 to ask such questions of anyone under 19. Scroll down for more... The Police Federation publishes results of a poll which indicates that 7 out of 10 people would like to see PCSOs replaced by police officers... The row over civilian "community support officers" was reignited by leaders of frontline police. Officials from the Police Federation published results of a poll which indicated that seven out of 10 people would like to see CSOs replaced by police officers. It comes just two days before Jacqui Smith faces perhaps her biggest challenge since taking over as Home Secretary. On Wednesday she is due to speak at the Federation's annual conference in front of 1,000 delegates who are still angry over the Government's decision to pos…

The Law Lords are to review a court finding that police forces failed to protect two men in a case that could affect policing throughout the UK. Optician Giles Van Colle, 25, was shot dead in London in 2000 before he could give evidence against a former worker. Hertfordshire Police were found to have breached his human rights but have appealed against the ruling. Sussex Police are also appealing over a finding that it failed to protect a man who was attacked by his former lover. Stephen Smith was attacked with a claw hammer but survived. He had repeatedy warned police in Brighton that his former partner was threatening to kill him. Lawyers have said the cases …

This has been a difficult week for West Midlands police. It is rare for public servants to be sued for libel, and the High Court apology the force gave to Channel 4 and the Dispatches programme was both humiliating and unprecedented. For all its unique features, however, this case is symptomatic of a broader set of failings: a loss of nerve, a warped sense of priorities and, in particular, a culture of weak-minded politicisation that should concern us all. Undercover Mosque, the edition of Dispatches at the heart of the legal case, made disturbing viewing. Broadcast in January last year, it showed clerics at mainstream mosques making extreme and inflammatory stateme…

From The Sunday Times May 18, 2008 Metropolitan police boss, Sir Ian Blair, to be ousted David Leppard The embattled Metropolitan police commissioner, Sir Ian Blair, has been told that his contract will not be renewed and that he should start planning for retirement, senior police officials have disclosed. The Met chief, who has survived a series of demands for his resignation, was notified in a private conversation that his plea for a second term had been rejected and the search for his replacement will begin soon. The decision is a grave blow to Blair, who has previously spoken of his desire to stay on until after the 2012 London Olympics. He had briefed colleagu…

Airport security was condemned as a joke after an Afghan involved in the Stansted hijacking was found to be working at Heathrow as a cleaner. Police arrested Nazamuddin Mohammidy at Terminal 5 where he showed his British Airways pass allowing him access to secure areas. The Tories said it was a breathtaking breach of security and demanded immediate action from the Government. Mohammidy, 34, was one of nine Afghans who won the right to live in Britain after hijacking a passenger flight in Afghanistan in 2000. The Boeing 727 was flown to Stansted in Essex where the captors threatened to kill the 160 passengers unless they were granted asylum. The gang was jailed but …
