PRIME Minister Gordon Brown today said Britain must be ready to use 21st century solutions to deal with 21st century threats of global terrorism and organised crime. It was time to write a "new chapter" in Britain’s history which would both protect citizens’ security and individual liberties, Mr Brown said in a speech in London. Addressing the Institute for Public Policy Research thinktank, Mr Brown described security as "one of the greatest challenges in the modern world" and warned that the security services were monitoring 2,000 terror suspects in the UK, in 200 networks with 30 current plots. He defended policies like 42-day pre-charge detention for terror s…

How offensive is the word 'pikey'? Source;BBC News Formula One commentator Martin Brundle is being investigated by media watchdog Ofcom after using the term "pikeys" in a television broadcast. But where does the word come from and how offensive is it? It's a word very rarely heard on television. In an interview with Bernie Ecclestone before Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, Brundle referred to repairs being made to the track. "There are some pikeys out there putting down new tarmac at Turn 10. Are they out of the way yet?" Ofcom said it had received seven complaints and ITV apologised to viewers. Brundle isn't the first media figure to be condemned for u…

A policeman who was accused of dangerous driving after a pursuit in which a passenger died was "maliciously prosecuted", a court has heard. Michael Alford, of Lincolnshire Police, was charged after Gareth Moore, 21, from Peterborough, died when his car was pursued by a patrol car in 2004. Pc Alford was cleared of the charge and began civil proceedings against the investigators Cambridgeshire Police. Cambridge County Court heard the Pc also claims false imprisonment. The court was shown footage from the 20-minute chase and crash, in December 2004, which started in the police officer's home town of Spalding. 'Lethal weapons' Mr Moore was a passenger in a Vauxhal…

Sweeping plans to toughen up community penalties and restore confidence in the criminal justice system will be published this week. Under the proposals, offenders serving community sentences could be required to wear jackets identifying that they are being punished for breaking the law. The plans have been drawn up by Louise Casey, former head of the Government's Respect Unit. The Guardian reported that while they appeared to have the backing of Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, some ministers close to PM Gordon Brown believed they were too punitive and would play to Conservative claims of a "broken society". http://news.aol.co.uk/tougher-community-pe...616013109990004 No…

A MOB smashed down a front door and attacked a mother and one of her six sons as they cowered in their living room. Patricia Hewitt-Booth dived on her teenage son Craig Hewitt to protect him as they were struck with a piece of wood by one of the 30-strong gang wearing balaclavas and carrying knives, baseball bats and crowbars. The screams of her five-year-old niece, a teenage boy and a 20-year-old man, who were also in the front room of the Chellaston home, did not deter the attackers. Four members of the gang then searched her home for her other sons, who range in age from five to 19, as others on the street lobbed bricks and metal pipes through the front room window.…

Well, that's thrown the cat in amongst the pigeons. All those Eurocrats with their noses in the trough will now have to rethink. Or will they? Will they just ignore the decision of the Irish to say no to the Lisbon treaty? That, I have to say, looks the more likely scenario. And why didn't we get the referendum that Zanu NL (sorry...Labour Party) promised? The answer's simple. 'Cos we'd have done exactly what the Irish have just done and Cyclops couldn't stomach the thought of that.

Brown wins crunch vote on 42 days detention[/url] The result of the vote is announced Prime Minister Gordon Brown has narrowly won a House of Commons vote on extending the maximum time police can hold terror suspects to 42 days. Thirty-six Labour MPs joined forces with Conservatives and Lib Dems to vote against the proposals. But that was not enough to defeat them - although the government still faces a battle in the House of Lords. The 42-day proposal was passed by 315 MPs to 306 - with votes by the nine DUP MPs proving crucial. But there was uproar in the Commons as the result of the key vote on 42 days was announced after five hours of tense debate - with Tory …

News Report Now I'm all in favour of religious tolerence but is this the way to acheive it? Should proper training in such sensitive issues be given to police and PCSO's?

Nicola Dowling 4/ 6/2008 A MASSIVE shake-up in the way police investigate gun gangs is being launched today. Children - some as young as twelve - are increasingly being enticed by gang culture. Today police bosses announced they were more than tripling the resources dedicated to solving the problem to £6m. Gang related gun crime is currently tackled by the Xcalibre Task Force, a team of officers set up to focus on the issue in 2004. As a result of the shake-up, the team will be boosted with the addition of sixty specialist detectives seconded from the murder squad and increased support from other specialist departments including the Tactical Aid Unit, the Cold Cas…

I found this interesting snippet of information on http://www.conservatives.com/pdf/policereform.pdf It outlines how the conservatives promise to reform the police service and while there is much good blurb about untying the police's hands and reducing the burden of central administration it also mentioned this; I know we have discussed the civilianisation of the custody sergeant role, but what do we think of this level of contracting and civilianisation?
