Police chiefs are being criticised for holding catwalk parades to show off their new-look uniforms. The black shirts and "easy-to-maintain" trousers are being modelled by officers at six displays over two days at the Royal Norfolk Show, near Norwich. However, the Taxpayers' Alliance group has said the shows are a waste of time and money. But a Norfolk Police spokeswoman said it was a way of presenting the new uniform to the community. The new look was unveiled by the force in March as part of a drive to become more "customer-led", which included putting more sergeants and inspectors on the ground. 'Sheer idiocy' The clothing was designed to improve performance…

Harman pushes discrimination plan Harriet Harman sets out plans to MPs Equality minister Harriet Harman has set out plans to allow firms to discriminate in favour of female and ethnic minority job candidates. She said firms should be able to choose a woman over a man of equal ability if they wanted to - or vice versa. The new Equalities Bill will also force employers to disclose salary structures in a bid to close the gender pay gap. The plans, which will be adopted first across England then Wales and Scotland, will also ban all age discrimination. Setting out the plans in a Commons statement, Ms Harman said the proposed bill - due later this year - would "address t…

The tape recorder has been a constant in police interviews for the last 20 years but it could soon be consigned to the bin. Plans to conduct and store interviews in digital format could radically speed up the time it takes to bring criminals to justice, say experts. The majority of forces still rely on analogue recorders, with many having up to half a million tapes in storage. No timeframe has been set to switch the 43 police forces in England and Wales. Networked evidence Time is running out for analogue tape which has already become a dead format on the high street; something that has an impact on police use of tape recorders. "Spares are getting harder to f…

New Report Doubtless this was 'procedurally correct', but it certainly seems to me to give support to the 'give us some common sense' lobby.

http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30100-1319820,00.html Here is a news story from sky. Dont get me wrong I obviously use Forums but I would never use sites such as Facebook, particularly if I was in a job like the Police where people want as much dirt on you (no matter how small) as possible. It also again gives ammo for the general public to lay into the Police when stories like this get printed (just look through the comments below) Such a shame really as a few officers actions make it news and therefore some members of the general public thinking worse of the Police still.

A police helicopter pursued a UFO after almost colliding with it over a military base near Cardiff. The pilot was forced to bank sharply to avoid being hit by the mystery aircraft as the helicopter was returning to St Athan base, reports the Daily Telegraph. The crew, who described the UFO as "flying saucer-shaped", gave chase as far as the north Devon coast before they ran low on fuel. The police aircraft was hovering at 500ft and waiting for clearance to land on June 7, when those onboard spotted the other craft hurtling towards them from below. A spokesman for South Wales Police said: "We can confirm the Air Support Unit sighted an unusual aircraft. This was report…

TASERS could soon be issued to ALL police officers — after a trial proved they deter violent criminals, the Home Office will announce today. Figures show deployment of the 50,000-volt stun guns has soared 15 times and firing of them three times during the course of the tests by specially-trained units. Only firearms officers normally have Tasers. But ten forces have successfully broadened their use in the 12-month trial which began last September. Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said: "Taser is making a real difference on our streets, not only keeping the public safe but also protecting police officers. "I am committed to giving our cops the weapons they need. If th…
