From April 2006 the Home Office announced that new Police Pension rules would come into place giving lifetime benefits to spouses, cohabitees & same sex partners. All new recruits will join this scheme and all current serving officers are eligible to transfer to the new scheme. Those currently in receipt of the spouse's pension due to a line of duty death do not have this option and pensions will be withdrawn if they cohabit or remarry in the future. By the very nature of these deaths, young families are left behind with no opportunity to rebuild their lives. Their officers did not get the opportunity to transfer to the lifetime benefit scheme due to their premature a…

Have your say - lobby your MP on the current pay issue “There is no greater responsibility than that which you as police officers accept. And there is no greater obligation for us in government than to support you in discharging that dutyâ€. Gordon Brown, ACPO Conference 2007 The failure to reach agreement on police pay for the second year running is disappointingly at odds with the support offered to police by Gordon Brown at the ACPO conference in June. As with our successful pay campaign last year we are not seeking for officers to be over compensated but to have their pay reflect the dangerous jobs they do and their unique employment status recognised. Please g…

Police Federation of England and Wales 2nd November 2007 Police pay arbitration hearing On 2nd November the independent Police Arbitration Tribunal convened and accepted evidence from both the Staff Side and Official Side of the Police Negotiating Board (PNB). London's Metropolitan police force has been found guilty of endangering the public over the shooting dead of a man officers mistook for a suicide bomber. The force broke health and safety laws when officers pursued Brazilian Jean Charles de Menezes to a Tube station and shot him seven times, a jury found. It was fined £175,000 with £385,000 costs over the 22 July 2005 shooting. The Old Bailey jury said police chief Cressida Dick, who led the operation, bore "no personal culpability". Ms Dick, now deputy assistant commissioner of the force, had been accused by prosecutors of failing to keep control of her officers. Despite calls for his resignation, Met Police …

Two police support officers looked on as a boy of ten drowned because they had not been trained to deal with such an emergency. Jordon Lyon had jumped into a pond after his step-sister Bethany Ganderton, eight, got into difficulties while swimming. Emergency services were called and two police community support officers - nicknamed "Blunkett's bobbies" - were the first on the scene on their bikes. But instead of wading in, they stood on the side of the pond and waited for trained officers to turn up. When Sergeant Craig Lippitt, a regular police officer, arrived minutes later, he stripped off his body armour and jumped into the pond in Wigan. Jordon was pulled f…

A policeman who died in a horror crash as he rode to work was due to be married. PC Ian Walker was on his way to start his shift at Lawcroft House police station in Bradford when his motorcycle was in a collision with a Nissan Almera car. PC Walker, 51, was flung from his bike and was pronounced dead at the scene, in Bolton Road, Bradford. Taken from the Labour Party Conference - full speech here - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7010664.stm CRIME A strong Britain is a Britain of strong communities where by accepting our mutual obligations to each other we can make our homes, our streets and our neighbourhoods safe. Those who choose to disobey the laws of our land - their crimes, the pain they inflict, that danger and immorality - threaten the rights and security of every citizen. No parent should ever have to endure the suffering of the family of Rhys Jones, the young boy callously murdered in Liverpool on Wednesday August 22nd. And the reason the people of Britain have been so shocked is th…

Police have spent £500 on toys for a nursery where vandals caused thousands of pounds worth of damage. Tins of paint were splashed around Home-Start in Oswestry, Shropshire, ruining most of the children's toys. Officers from the local force said they were so moved by the disappointment of the children at the Unicorn Road nursery they decided to find the cash. West Mercia Police said it was still looking for people with information about the incident. The money for the new toys has come from the force's Pc Fund, designed to help victims of crime. The fund is made up of money from the sale of seized property where its rightful owner cannot be found and from volun…
