11 Menezes police face no action Mr Menezes was mistaken for a suicide bomber Eleven officers involved in the shooting of Brazilian Jean Charles de Menezes will not face disciplinary action, the BBC has learned. They were among 15 Metropolitan Police officers interviewed by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC). No decisions have yet been made on the four most senior officers investigated. A two-year-old baby girl has been shot dead in a gang-related drive-by shooting in Wanganui. Police said the incident happened shortly after 10pm last night and was believed to be "between Black power members". Inspector Mike Coleman of police central communications said details were sketchy, but the baby was understood to be inside a gang address on Puriri Street. St John's Ambulance said the little girl was dead when its staff arrived and no one else was injured in the incident. A man has been arrested following the stabbing of a police officer in Fife. The policeman suffered arm and stomach injuries in an attack after he and a colleague had stopped a van in Kirkcaldy at about 1700 GMT. The officer, from the Glenrothes area, is expected to be discharged from the town's Victoria Hospital following treatment to his injuries. The 24-year-old arrested man, from Kirkcaldy, is due to appear before the town's Sheriff Court on Monday. The policeman was stabbed as the driver and passenger of the stopped van tried to escape. The number of police officers in England and Wales has fallen for the first time since March 2000, Home Office figures have revealed. The total dropped by 173 officers from the end of March last year to 141,873 at the end of September. The government has made recruitment a priority since the rapid decline in numbers during the late 1990s. In 2004, the number of police officers in England and Wales exceeded 140,000 for the first time. The figures also show a 35% rise, year on year, in the number of police community support officers (CSOs) to 8,517. UK prisoners should get vote, European court rules Laws setting out who can and cannot take part in elections are to be rewritten after the European court of human rights today ruled in favour of giving British prisoners the right to vote. Ruling in the case of a former prisoner against the United Kingdom, the Strasbourg court said the disenfranchisement of 48,000 convicts in British jails violated the European convention on human rights.
