http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6216605.stm What does everything think of the honours system? Having a look at the issue of QPMs and others it seems (like in many other areas) that the frontline officer is completely ignored.

Nearly 200 prisoners and former inmates forced to stop taking drugs by going "cold turkey" are to receive payments. The unspecified settlement followed claims the practice amounted to assault and a breach of human rights. The claimants had been using heroin and other opiates and were understood to been receiving alternative treatment before going to prison. The Home Office said it "reluctantly" decided to settle out of court to "minimise costs to the taxpayer". It said the cases dated back to the early 1990s. The settlement originates from a test case earlier this year, when six claimants were given the green light to sue the Home Office. They said once in jai…

Ex-MI5 boss raps 'useless' ID cards The Government is coming under pressure to rethink its plans for identity cards after a former security service boss warned they would not make Britain any safer from terrorists. The ex-director general of MI5 Dame Stella Rimington said she did not believe her former agency is pressing for the introduction of ID cards, and she warned they would be "absolutely useless" unless they could be made unforgeable. Her comments led to calls from opposition parties and civil liberties groups for the Government to abandon the scheme, which the Home Office estimates will cost £5.8bn, while critics claim the bill could reach £40bn. Call for city cops pay rise MANCHESTER'S police officers should earn more money than their colleagues in other parts of the country, according to the head of the city's force. Chief Constable Michael Todd has said there is a difference in patrolling the streets of Manchester and working in rural areas - and that should be reflected in pay. Mr Todd was talking at the Police Federation's annual conference. He was asked about his own pay packet, which increased by 19 percent in September to £154,500 per year. He said: "It was recognised that there is a difference between being chief constable of GMP and being chief constable of Dorset, Wiltshire and a number of othe…

Wanted: Scots police officers seeking to fight crime in sunnier climes FED up walking the beat on a wet Wednesday in Wishaw? Tired of chasing felons in Falkirk? Scotland’s boys in blue with the blues are to be targeted by a massive recruitment drive to attract them overseas. A campaign involving police forces from the “Big Five†– the US, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia – will be launched next week in a bid to address their recruitment crises. Emigrate 2005, the world’s biggest emigration event, to be held in Esher near London, will see the start of a concerted bid to convince officers to leave Scotland for sunnier climes. Organisers say dema…

PCs are taking on second jobs Nearly 80 police officers in Norfolk are moonlighting in their spare time - and the trend is set to continue as cash-strapped constables battle to get on the property ladder, it has been claimed. A Freedom of Information (FoI) request by the Evening News has revealed that about one in 20 of the county's 1,600 police officers have second jobs. The extra-hours work includes being a musician, farmer and caretaker. The vast majority of the jobs are registered by constables, who earn about £20,000 during their first two years' service. Malcolm Reeve, chairman of the Norfolk Police Federation, said: “Sometimes you have to ignore the fact …

Speeding drivers sent back to school to evade penalty points POLICE are to offer speeding drivers a safety course as an alternative to penalty points after education was found to be more effective than punishment. A study of drivers detected by speed cameras in Humberside found that a quarter of those fined £60 and given three points were caught speeding again in a year. Fewer than one in 12 of those offered a speed-awareness course reoffended. The evidence that drivers are more likely to slow down if taught the consequences of speeding has not been lost on the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo), which is preparing to approve national guidelines for speed-a…

More than 250 kilograms of cocaine have been seized and six people arrested, after an investigation led to the interception of a yacht off the coast of Wales. 28 August 2019 NCA intelligence had identified the vessel, the Sy Atrevido, as carrying a large drugs shipment to the UK from South America. As a result, officers from Border Force cutter HMC Protector boarded the sailing yacht approximately half a mile off the coast of Wales on Tuesday 27 August. The vessel was then escorted into Fishguard port and a search by Border Force’s Deep Rummage team began. Officers discovered numerous packages containing white powder, which had been distributed throughout the ve…
