Two police support officers looked on as a boy of ten drowned because they had not been trained to deal with such an emergency. Jordon Lyon had jumped into a pond after his step-sister Bethany Ganderton, eight, got into difficulties while swimming. Emergency services were called and two police community support officers - nicknamed "Blunkett's bobbies" - were the first on the scene on their bikes. But instead of wading in, they stood on the side of the pond and waited for trained officers to turn up. When Sergeant Craig Lippitt, a regular police officer, arrived minutes later, he stripped off his body armour and jumped into the pond in Wigan. Jordon was pulled f…

A policeman who died in a horror crash as he rode to work was due to be married. PC Ian Walker was on his way to start his shift at Lawcroft House police station in Bradford when his motorcycle was in a collision with a Nissan Almera car. PC Walker, 51, was flung from his bike and was pronounced dead at the scene, in Bolton Road, Bradford. As well as a fiancee, Ian left two children, his parents and a brother. The driver and two passengers from the car were arrested soon after the a…

Taken from the Labour Party Conference - full speech here - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7010664.stm CRIME A strong Britain is a Britain of strong communities where by accepting our mutual obligations to each other we can make our homes, our streets and our neighbourhoods safe. Those who choose to disobey the laws of our land - their crimes, the pain they inflict, that danger and immorality - threaten the rights and security of every citizen. No parent should ever have to endure the suffering of the family of Rhys Jones, the young boy callously murdered in Liverpool on Wednesday August 22nd. And the reason the people of Britain have been so shocked is th…

Police have spent £500 on toys for a nursery where vandals caused thousands of pounds worth of damage. Tins of paint were splashed around Home-Start in Oswestry, Shropshire, ruining most of the children's toys. Officers from the local force said they were so moved by the disappointment of the children at the Unicorn Road nursery they decided to find the cash. West Mercia Police said it was still looking for people with information about the incident. The money for the new toys has come from the force's Pc Fund, designed to help victims of crime. The fund is made up of money from the sale of seized property where its rightful owner cannot be found and from volun…

A schoolboy brandishes an AK-47 assault rifle on a suburban railway platform at teatime. In pictures captured on closed circuit television, he loads the Kalashnikov, lifts it to his shoulder and aims it at a terrified construction worker. But even though the workman's boss immediately dialled 999, a dispute between Greater Manchester Police and their colleagues in the British Transport Police left the boys free to travel to a nearby station and escape. Ballistics experts have since examined the CCTV footage and say the weapon appears to be real. David Wood, a crane driver, who was working opposite the station, said he watched in horror as one teenager took the AK47…

Between 500 and 600 people die every year in state custody in England and Wales, a report due out later will say. The figures, seen by the BBC, were compiled for the first time by the Forum for Preventing Deaths in Custody. They cover deaths in prisons, police cells, secure hospitals and other establishments and include those from natural causes, suicides and murders. The forum was established to help cut deaths in custody - but campaigners say it is toothless and lacks resources. The report is the first time figures from across the criminal justice system have been brought together for a complete look at deaths in state custody. Toothless The aim of the forum is to…

Rt Hon Gordon Brown MP Prime Minister 10 Downing Street London SW1A 2AA Dear Prime Minister, We are sure you will be receiving numerous letters on becoming Prime Minister but we wanted to take this opportunity to send our congratulations. Last week we had the opportunity to listen to your first substantive speech on policing matters at the ACPO conference.
