I thought I would post this topic up for discussion. Personally my preference would be for widespread impairment testing of ALL people involved in safety critical occupations. WHEN the Home Office finally approves the impairment testing kit currently under test it will be very cheap to impairment test such people before the start of each shift. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7731840.stm Most Britons want teachers, police officers and nurses to undergo regular drug tests, a new survey has suggested. Researchers found the number of people who believed key workers should face testing had grown in recent years. More than 80% said police officers should undergo routine t…

There have been excuses made that the mother is too young, what a load of crap. Other excuses from social workers and doctors. I just cant understand these people. The doctor said the child was moving around and cryin so she couldnt examine him properly (Erm, perhaps cus he was in pain) And where the hell are the mothers parents?? Out of curosity, is it set up with a Force on a pay as you call basis, or is a contract taken out per anum. Thames Valley Police spent over £1m on interpretation and translation over the past year, it has been revealed. The Conservatives uncovered the figures which show the cost of providing such services has risen by 127% since 2004. Shadow minister for police reform David Ruffley said the findings suggested "we are importing more foreign criminals" and spending less on frontline police. But Thames Valley Police said the services were an "integral part of policing" a diverse community. Thames Valley Police had the third highest bill for interpretation and trans…

The Metropolitan Police have decided to put in a bid to buy New Scotland Yard building, worth more than £100m, which it currently rents. Owner Land Securities put it on the market this week saying it had generated "strong investor interest". The 20-storey building in Victoria Street, central London, has been the home of the force since the 1960s. The decision to buy the site with taxpayers' money was taken at a special Metropolitan Police Authority meeting. The force currently pays an annual rent of £4,714,500 for the grey building and holds the lease of the block until 2064. New Scotland Yard houses senior officers, the Counter Terrorism Command and other uni…

They escaped in the Audi, and travelled down Anchor Street. It is believed that it was stolen from the Childwall area on September 5. The bank was closed to customers at the tim…

After years of complaints that judges may not always be in touch with the modern world, one judge hit back last week by suggesting that younger jury members may be too conditioned by technology to give defendants a fair trial. Worse, they are so used to doing their own research online that they have wrecked several major trials. The problem, according to Lord Chief Justice, Lord Judge of Draycote is that most young people get their information from the internet. He said: "They are not listening. They are reading." In similar vein, teachers often observe that a diet of TV and the internet mean that today’s youth have difficulty concentrating for long periods of time. I…

Burglars beat 89-year-old veteran An 89-year-old war veteran was beaten repeatedly after confronting burglars who used what police say was an "obscene" level of violence. Bob Scofield and his 87-year-old wife Mollie were asleep in bed at their home in Salterforth, Lancashire, when the burglars broke in early on Monday. The pair were later found "shocked and injured" after a neighbour noticed their curtains were not open. Lancashire Police said the attack was "heartless, cowardly and despicable". Mr Scofield suffered facial injuries. Both he and his wife are in hospital. 'Defenceless couple' The Royal Navy veteran served in World War II crewing escort ships c…

Inmate escapes German jail in box By Greg Morsbach BBC News A manhunt is under way in western Germany for a convicted drug dealer who escaped by mailing himself out of jail. The 42-year-old Turkish citizen - who was serving a seven-year sentence - had been making stationery with other prisoners destined for the shops. At the end of his shift, the inmate climbed into a cardboard box and was taken out of prison by express courier. His whereabouts are still unknown. The chief warden of the jail told the BBC this was an embarrassing incident. The prison authorities in Willich, near Duesseldorf, said the man, who was tall and broad-shouldered, had hidden in a bo…
