Next Met boss 'should be boring' Kit Malthouse said Sir Ian "strayed over the line 'too often" A man who would be involved in the search for the next Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police said the top job should go to someone "pretty boring". Kit Malthouse, London's deputy mayor of policing, said the leading officer needed to be mindful of the "often grey line between politics and policing". He was criticised by a retired senior officer who said police "do not want leadership that is boring". Commissioner Sir Ian Blair had resigned over lack of support from the mayor. To put it crudely it is not a job for someone with 'double L plates' - standing for 'learni…

Arrest over police murder attempt Police cordoned off a road as inquiries continue A man has been arrested on suspicion of the attempted murder of a police officer who was hit by a van after trying to question the driver. North Wales Police said the officer tried to question a driver on suspicion of failing to stop. The officer was hit as the driver allegedly tried to move away just after 0730 GMT in Hawarden, Flintshire. An eyewitness said she was convinced the officer could have been killed, but he escaped with only minor injuries. I think the policeman concerned deserves a commendation for bravery... he was extremely brave Hilary McGuill, witnessA force s…

Government defeat on DNA database Thousands of DNA samples from innocent people are now retained. The government has been defeated in the House of Lords over the issue of keeping people's DNA and fingerprints on the police national database. Peers backed a Tory amendment calling for specific guidelines to help people seeking to have their details removed from the database by 161 votes to 150 But ministers are unlikely to redraft the legislation, arguing that existing public safeguards will be sufficient. The defeat is the latest inflict…

The number of people charged for driving while talking on the mobile has been climbing steadily for the last few years. The majority were Londoners, who are also the most adept in getting away with it. The figures come from a commons answer in response to a question from Bury MP David Ruffley asking how many drivers were stopped, charged, convicted, fined and cautioned. The first two of those aren't recorded nationally, and neither are fixed-penalty notices which make up the majority of cases, but the remaining figures have been made available for the years 2003-2006. Only one person was fined for using a mobile phone in 2003, but come 2004 789 people were up in court c…

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article1878356.ece Saw this article. When things like this happen I think the police in general lose respect from the general public. Quote from news article: "Its one rule for them, and one rule for us." I think the "image" of policing in general needs to change in order for police to gain the respect of the general public. But tabloids make this far more difficult by the way they sometimes exagerate and make things like this look really major. Can anyone else give me their views on this?

Police face 'management claptrap' Police forces have brought in "too much management claptrap", the chief constable of Essex has said. Roger Baker made the comments after becoming the first chief officer to sign a new citizens' charter watched by Home Secretary Jacqui Smith in Essex. The charter spells out what the public can expect from the police. Mr Baker welcomed the charter - called Police Pledges - and said it would give the public reference points on the standard of service they could expect. Asked whether he thought that police had lost their focus on the "citizen", he replied: "Yes". "Over a period of time. I cannot put my finger on it," he added. "I…
